I am thinking about getting this lens or a 70-200 f2.8(non IS) with a tc. has anyone have any actual experience with these two lenses and how do they compare IQ wise?

1st thing I can tel you is... the 2.8 w/TC is a beast 70-200=3.28 lb + 2x TC=11.46 oz so you're talking about 4lbs the 100-400mm weighs in at just 3.04 lbs I'd say the IQ is better on the 100-400mm over the combo, but not by tons.I'd say the IQ on the 100-400mm beats the combo by a good amount out to 370mm though.
If you're only doing wildlife the dust pump wins hands down if you want a lens to do closer work, portraits and on a rare occasion wildlife, and can't justify,(or afford both) consider the 2.8 TC combo. I started using the combo, but ended up getting the 100-400mm and haven't looked back.
and try and get the IS if you're adding the TC... the longer the focal length the more you'll notice any small vibration you take close shots with a 50mm so IS not all that critical, but when you move from a portrait distance(10 ft.) to a whitetail deer at 100 yds, that small vibration magnifies to a shake.
I found a strange thing... I was using them on a 7D and the IQ on the 70-200mm + 1.4X TC was significantly softer than the 2X combo(I have the mark III versions of the TCs and my 70-200mmL IS is version 1(not sure if that is why
hope this helps

Tom

I agree with the poster above, but would add that I find myself using 400mm on this lens pretty much 100% of the time. You might want to consider the 400mm prime instead of the dust pump.

This is off topic but....
I got my 70-200 f/2.8 Mark II on Friday and I am pretty much blown away and I am thinking of selling my 100-400 and getting a 1.4 Mark II and a 2x Mark III TC's...

Am I nuts or what?

Cheers.

thanks for the replies. I had a friend lend me his 100-400 and I went out shooting today. I must say it is better than I thought it would be. So I am thinking this is the lens I am getting. very surprised at how sharp it is wide open at 400mm even with a 250 second shutter. The haring was 320mm f5.6 at 1/100 sec

used the 100-400 in combo with the 1.4III: for birding, the AF is quite slow @F8, even on the 1DMKIV.. i guess on a faster 70-200 @F4 will be much better!!!

I am going to rent a 1.4xIII and a 2xIII for this weekend and see how it goes with the 100-400 and my brand new 70-200 f/2.8 MkII. That lens beats the crap out of the 100-400 in AF speed and picture quality between 100-200mm. I am really curious how it compares with TC's.

Cheers.

Well I just sold my 100-400 which makes me real sad because it's the lens I have owned the longest, it was that good!
I bought a 2x III to go with my 70-200 IS II, I hope I won't be disappointed!
