Hello everyone

RE: Canon SD 780IS

My camera has

L 4000 x 3000

M1 3264 x 2448

M2 2592 x 1944

M3 1600 x 1200

S 640 x 480

W 4000 x 2248

What size is "best" for 4 x 6 and 8 x 10 prints ? How about for viewing on 60 inch HDTV ?

Thank You

RAW, and as big as the camera will let you shoot. That gives you the ability to adjust the size down later if needed or blow it up as needed. At least that's my thinking ;)

Well, a good print is usually 300 PPI (pixels per inch).
So if you do de math, you can print:

L 4000 x 3000: 13x10

M1 3264 x 2448: 11x8

M2 2592 x 1944: 8x6

M3 1600 x 1200: 5x4

S 640 x 480: 2x1.5

W 4000 x 2248: 13x7.5

This will give you the maximum size for the very best print quality ;)
For the best viewing on a HDTV (1920x1080) you should get any resolution BIGGER than that. In your case, 1600x1200 or bigger. :)

Photography is about GEAR and not talent or practice. Practice won't make you a better photographer. Expensive equipment will. =D

But as stated, unless you have a good reason not to, I'd always shoot at the highest possible resolution. It's easy to make a photo smaller without losing quality, but the same cannot be said for enlarging it if you decide later on you want to print it larger or the TVs with even higher resolution than 1080 pixels start becoming commonplace (and you know it's just a matter of time).

Memory cards are relatively cheap, so have multiple on you at all times. Hard drive memory is even cheaper.
