My 70-300 fills most of my needs. I got the 85 1.2 and even though I do not shoot very many portraits I have found it is a fantastic still life, and casual walk around lens. I have not taken my 24-70 II out of my bag in a very long time. Looking at my photo library, out of 960 photos taken this year I have 64 using this lens.

Was wondering what primes experienced prime users would replace the 24-70 with and why. Any input would be appreciated.

You took 960 photos in a year? That's how many I take every weekend and I try to take pictures everyday!:)

Is the reason your not using it because of size/weight? Quality or that you just don't like to shoot wide? Seems most go the other way and sell primes for the new 24-70

24/50 combo is my choice. 35 is a good middle ground but I would not want 35 as my widest lens

I'm on the same boat with my 24-70 MKII. I'm not a landscape guy, and I probably have shot with the MKII just once since owning it. I also own a S35 and 85L.

If I were to sell it, i'll probably replace it with a 24L and call it the day.

No, 960 this year. Thats 5 months...darn that is not very many either! :)
Weight and size are not an issue. I just don't seem to use it much but, I gotta admit it is a nice feeling owning it. Hell, I don't even know if I would use primes very much. It's just I hate to have that much cash tied up in something I don't use much. I think I am confusing myself:rolleyes:

I know just how you feel. Sometimes I don't use a lens for months and I feel same way. I say hang onto it for a year and see if you don't start wanting to use it more. It's not like it will go down much in value

it's an expensive lens not to use but so are primes especially if you are asking other people what you should use :D!

hey get an iphone. it's got a great little camera, great editing software and I use mine more than you use your DSLR gear ;).

The camera in my samsung is better than the iPhone :)
Not asking what "I" should use. Was asking what others use and what they use them for. Before I make up my mind I wanted to see what interesting ideas came up.
That last line is hilarious! (and probably true)

I have been shooting primes (28 2.8, 35 2, 50 1.8, 85 1.8), on crop & ff, and doing fine. The 50 1.8 is problematic; it just focus too slowly for anything moving. I can't afford the 24-70 II. I did a lot of review-reading while looking for a decent zoom in this range; changing lenses in the middle of a game is not acceptable. My solution was the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. I think it is better than most reviewers give it credit for. I haven't shot a game with it, yet, but backyard testing is re-assuring.

So yes, you can get by with primes. If you don't use the 24-70 II much, sell it. There are much cheaper alternatives to the expense of that lens.

Wow. 900 photos in a year. I've taken 1500 at one football game. I try to stop that, though. Pray & spray is not the way to get good shots, and it wastes a lot of time deleting them all.
