wow, I learned something new today...I have never tried to fire it with the body cap on, always had a lens on it.

 And normally so would I ;) I probably would have never discovered this issue had I not decided to run them side by side like this.

Huzzzuh! Figured it out! So, apparently, the new firmware (which this camera came loaded with already) changed the metering system where by in dim light, it will slow down the fps (something I've now read that people hope Canon will fix sometime). I opened the blinds on my window and pointed the camera at the window and bam, 8fps, consistently, fast and lovely sounding. I put the camera in my dark closet and yup, right down to 4 fps. Body cap or no body cap I guess it doesn't matter, light leaks in through the view finder and it is enough to trick the new metering system.

Thanks guys for helping me puzzle it out :) Glad I don't have to return it. I guess this will just be a quirk of the 7D until Canon fixes it in a later firmware, because the 5D3 doesn't seem to care about the lighting.
And yes I JUST just got it, as of Sunday.

Very interesting, didn't know that.

Let me know if the same thing happens when you try it out. I have a feeling a lot of people probably don't know about it, because really who shoots in a dim room with the body cap on... I could find very little about my specific situation on the internet, except that I read that this is what seems to happen to the burst rate since the firmware update.

Sorry for hijacking the thread  Some camera threads are just for photos and some allow discussion, I wasn't sure. Back to your regular scheduled photo programing :)
