Im looking for a light stand mainly to be used with speedlights at the moment, but they will be mainly used outdoors with umbrellas or softboxes. Is a c stand overkill for a speedlight setup? or is it necessary because of the rigidity of the light stand to deal with the wind and such on location with umbrellas/softboxes?

10# ankle weights on lighter-weight stands makes more sense IMO.

Honestly after using nicer avenger stands, I wouldn't go to cheapy lighter stands. And I am handicapped guy for whom weight is much much bigger deal. Why carry 10lb bag and 3-4 lb stand when I can use 14lb stand without any weights. I use avenger wheeled stands for indoors/outdoors. For indoors ony avnger rollers are real nice.

I've used my avenger outdoors with an umbrella on a windy day and it still fell over. Umbrellas are just bad with wind. Haha.

It's heavy and durable.. It'll last forever. Great for indoors. I use mine with the boom arm for my large octabox for studio shots. I do think its overkill for speedlites, but you'll keep it forever.

Most avenger stands are lifetime investments.

The A2030D. Where I shot, it was ridiculously windy. You'd definitely need an assistant holding down a stand.

I used the cheaper stands for years before finally buying some Avenger C stands last year after my 6 600EX-RT's and a PLM came crashing to the ground in a light wind. The stand had one sand bag on it (basically all you dare put on the cheaper stands) and an assistant holding it but the assistants attention was distracted and the PLM was destroyed but thankfully only one 600 was scratched. Now with the Avengers I put a sand bag on each leg and even one on the frame if needed. NO an Avenger C stand is not over kill for a Speedlite or Speedlites especially when you consider the extra weight, solid build as well as the fact you can stack a lot of weight on them, the $200 is cheap insurance in my book.

C-stands that is what I thought. Try wheeled stands next time. For some reason folks says c-stands more stable. I find wheeled to be better as bigger base.
