tripod yes or no? thanks

i really wanted a carbon fiber tripid but i cant spend the money on one right now. so i was thinking about settling for this manfrotto 293

Manfotto yes but the 055 PROB is your best choice. I 've used one for over30 years. Get a solid ball head (not Manfotto). If you look (or buy used) you can do it for $250 - $300.

I second the idea of staying away from any of Manfrotto's quick release systems. Do yourself a favor and select a tripod head with an Arca Swiss compatible quick release system. You'll avoid the scenic route of tripod despair.

That head will work for almost any tripod...

alright im also considering the vanguard sbh 250. now just need to find a tri pod

Agreed. 055xprob is the best buy for the money. Legs will cost about $150 new and you can probably find used ones for less. I have two of them. They last forever and are very stable. There's a reason they have been made for about 40 years.

the 055xprob and 498rc2 is a great starter setup for the money. be warned, soon you will be wanting to upgrade to something more expensive though

I'll throw a thought in here. With the reference to sports and cars in the OP's reference, I've tried and don't care for ball heads if something is moving. Right now I have a Manfrotto 055 Prob (not home right now, think that's the model) along with a 3 way head (bought used this last year). It allows panning shots with more stability than I could get when I tried out a borrowed ball head. I like to do airshows and landscape shooting and this has worked better for me stability wise when there's motion involved. I've considered a gimbal head but it's not in the budget at this time but is definitely on my radar for some time in the future.

I use a pan head that way. It works well and much cheaper than a gimbal head. Do have a homemade gimbal in the works though. Hoping it works out well.

I have an old Bogan pan/tilt head (model 3047) that I have always preferred for my view camera. The 3047 was my main head before I got a ball head.

I also have what Bogan used to call a "3D" head that came with my first 3021 (the old Bogan number for what is now the 055XPROB). It's sort of a pan/tilt but a little more adjustable than most. I never used it much because it's just too fussy to work with but it is a bit unusual.
