In this corner, we have representing the snake genus Thamnophis, the garter snake:

Representing the other side is Anaxyrus americanus, the American toad:

The element of surprise can be fatal:

Weighing up the risk, should I, could I?

Alas, the snake retreats and the toad has no idea how he narrowly escaped death. I suppose the snake decided that the toad was more than he needed and the toad is none the wiser. For he has no idea that he lives to see another day.

Now that is a neat snake series! That toad did look a bit large for an easy meal!

Thank you:) I was mesmerized and could not wait to see how it unfolded. The snake sat there watching the toad for about 10 minutes or so before he just backed away into the brush.

Good series there, and a good eye to catch it!

Great series. I just spotted my first toad in Virginia last week. Sadly all I had was my X100 with me.

Thank you. I can't take all the credit for seeing this first, my dog is the one who noticed the snake first. Then when I grabbed my camera to get a pic of the snake, I noticed the toad.
