One more milky way shot I just finished editing. I caught a slight hint of aurora and a satellite just over top of Devils Tower.

Awesome! Jealous, as I want to shoot here really badly. Hopefully someday soon.

From this past weekend. I had wanted to stay out later since the MW rose around midnight, but I had a 40 minute drive back and I was getting way too sleepy.

How do you know where to point your camera at? I mean, for a shot with the "torn" milky way, am I supposed to look north\south\east\west? Also, what settings are you usually using for shots of the milky way? I heard I should be at about 20 second (from the 600\500 rule of thumb), iso 2000-5000 and lowest f stop. Is that right? I will probably go on a shoot today if the skies will be be clear and moon-free.

Well, at first, you should be able to see the milky way with naked eye. If not, well, either the milky way is not visible (it's hidden), or it's not a good place to do nightscape with the milky way (too much light pollution)

But, one way to find out where the Milky Way is, is to use Google sky maps or some app like this. If you don't have such an app on your smartphone (or don't have a smartphone at all), you can shoot with very high iso aiming at different directions and find out where it is :)

as for the settings, you're correct. Just to be clear, the rule of thumb says [full frame focal length equivalent]/600.

Thanks. I have an Iphone, can you recommend a nine app(s)? Unfortunately, I live in a city, and there is a big mall with VERY heavy light pollution like 2 miles from me. There is an open space, something like a field with no light at all, but close to the mall I was talking about.

i guess star walk (external link) should do the job. I'm sorry, I don't have an iphone or any other ios device, so i'm not into ios apps.
