I've never seen the infielders wearing protective headgear like that. I'm a little surprised at the intensity in #3 considering the age.

Yeah, they all wear masks. Outfielders too. Kinda bad for pictures. Those girls come to play and take it pretty serious!

I coach an 8u team, pretty on the outside, knock you down and steal your lunch money on the inside. Extremely competitive. Having coached both boys and girls over the years, I'd give the girls the edge in intensity.

As far as the facemasks, I have no idea why any parent would put their daughter on the field without one. The dimensions of the field are usually smaller than the boys' fields are, and the girls' bats are a little "hotter" than the boys ( depending on league affiliation, and age). We have a girl on our team nicknamed "killer", in one game last year she broke a nose, and laid over another girls kneecap on separate ground balls to outfield players. Ironically, every girl on that team owned facemasks, and put them on only after the ball hit the one girl in the face.

Really on the face saver masks at 6U?

I see 12U and up needing these masks for pitcher, 3rd and 1st, especially when the girls are playing tight and are 40 feet from the plate.

But I don't even see many HS girls wearing them at SS or 2nd, and I have never seen 10U or lower girls (even in the crazy, San Diego travel teams) that hit hard enough to really make these a necessary item at such low ages.

FYI, for baseball fans that are not real familiar with fast pitch softball, in softball the basepaths are only 60 feet vs. the 90 feet in baseball. On top of that, in fastpitch the 3rd and 1st basemen typically play in front of the basepaths, meaning they are often only 40-55 feet from the plate. For this reason, girls in these spots (along with the pitcher who also starts only 43 feet from the plate) often wear face gear. You really can lose teeth in this game.

In baseball the pitcher is 70 feet from the plate and the rest of the infield usually stands 95+ feet from home. It makes a huge difference. '

Nevertheless, I have never seen players 10U and younger that could make this precaution necessary.
