Foxes at the Den

I am kind of ambivalent about these photos because of what wound up happening to the kits, but here are the shots I got of the fox den at the Yellowstone Picnic Area. The day after I left the park, a badger came in and fought the vixen and drove the family to another hole. The next day, the badger invaded that hole and ate the kits.

At least you got to immortalize them in your images before they went to the cycle of nature.
It is sad but there isnt anything you can do.

That's terrible news. My wife and I really enjoyed watching them a few weeks ago.

Here is a link to the story in the Billings Gazette about this encounter, great shots. Not sure if the kits were actually killed or not.

Unfortunately, that article was written before the badger got the kits.

I hate to be argumentative (the sure sign that an argument is on its wayops ... but while the loss of the kits (if they are gone, have seem both versions of the story) would mean the continuation of the badger, and its family. The circle of life is wonderful, no matter who is playing. Personally, I think seeing the badger would have been great... seeing the fight (as many did) would have been even greater.

No one weeps when an eagle swoops down and grabs a fish... (even a baby fish)

Remember the early bird may get the worm, but its the early worm that gets eaten.

The disappointment for me is that the "easy" photo op for the fox will be over before I get there next week.

A puppy dying from heartworms is part of the circle of life, too. Just because something is natural doesn't mean we can't be sad because of it. Nature is a cold, heartless witch at times.

Sad story but really nice shots. The little ones are so cute!

Aww they are so beautiful, it is really sad that the fox kits had to go, i would have cried, atleast you got keepers of the kits and a story to tell behind it for a lifetime
