Which is the better camera, the S95, the S100, or the S110?

I have a good DSLR setup, but will be shopping for an S to take on a cruise next month.

I'm either going to buy new or gently used.

The S-95 has a CCD, which some say is better for a point and shoot.

The S100 switched to CMOS, and the S110 adds a couple features here and there.


I guess my question is this: If all three were in new condition and the exact same price, which would you buy and why?

I sure would like to go from laptop and desktop editing to tablet/phone editing. It would make things smoother in some ways, especially while traveling.

The S95 having a CCD sensor also means reduced video resolution.
The CMOS sensor produces slightly softer images, but only to an
extent which can be easily overcome by setting the camera to
create more contrasty/sharpened images. I'd take the S110,
not because of this or that feature, but because its interface
is the latest, and that, in my opinion, is a critical matter.

Agree with the better features of the S110 over the S95/S100. I took a Nikon D5100 compact DSLR and a S110 on a Hawaiian cruise last November. The Nikon was left in the cabin for most of the trip due to its bulkier size. It was much easier carrying the S110 around. My wife brought and used my old S100 as her camera during the trip also.

I second the S110. Right combination of features and fundamental image quality. It is also one of the best reviewed cameras as you can see on this site: http://www.claritific.​com/cameras/Canon_Powe​rShot_S110/ .

This is not your question but I'd say if you can, consider the Sony RX100 over S110.

Yes, but the Sony is quite expensive.

I've had the S90, S100, and the S110. I like the S110 the best.

Ive had the S90, S95 and now S110. I agree with the others that the S110 is the best so far.

In fact i sold my S95 a few months ago to get the S110. I really like the touch screen, especially for taking shots with and being able to pinch to zoom in on play back.
It might sound like a gimmick but it does have its uses.

Wifi i is good but you cant use upload raw files, so you have to shooting jpg or raw + jpg. so not as useful for me as i first thought, but its been handy being able to upload shots directly to facebook when im out.

I always shoot in raw so for me out of camera images are not what i end up with, i always do a bit of PP on my shots.

If i had to say which had the best IQ i'd put my old S95 slightly in front. raw files just seem that tiny bit crisper and sharper in Lightroom, but the extra features the S110 offers outweigh that slight advantage.

I have found the S110 to slightly, and I mean barley edge out my S100 that I had before. I did jump on the Panasonic LX7 and used it for a while. It had a nice sharp lens and fast to boot but IMO the S110 is much snappier in focus Speed and acquisition. The touchscreen is very useful. For manual point selection it can't be beat. It is much quicker than diving into the menus and going through the whole hassle of that. WIFI is pretty good overall and I have been impressed with it's consistency with my Google Nexus 4/S110 combo.

I have also found and maybe it's just me but the Jpeg rendering in the S110, seems to my eyes to be the best it has ever been. Just an observation. The S110 has many advantages and well worth the few extra bucks IMO.

I'm going to vote for the S100, because I've yet to have a great experience with cameras with WiFi on board and personally think the technology hasn't quite caught up to manufacturer's attempts to add another bullet point to the spec sheet.

I also really don't care for Canon's touch-screen interface and the capacitive screen itself just isn't as good as those found on iPhone or better Android phones. If you are thinking strongly about the S110, I would really try the touch screen first to see if it's right for you.

That said, the IQ of the S110 is superior to the S100. I just can't shake the feeling I'm also paying for features I don't like/are half baked. What's best for you is the camera you enjoy using.

They're all good cameras. The S100 is still my pick of the three! S100 beats the S95 on technicals...faster burst, higher ISO, better video, etc. I also am NOT a fan of touch screens...otherwise the S110 is basically the same camera as S100 (WiFi instead of GPS). You need to look at the photos with a microscope to see any differences so imo buy the one that fits your wallet.

I went with the S100 and am very happy with it.

I like the wider-longer zoom of the 100/110 vs the 95. I thought the GPS MIGHT be useful, for sure better than the WiFi of the 110 for me. I PP everything even if its just to lighten the shadows (Fla. sun) and a small crop to level the horizon and get the image positioned where I want it. Still have not gotten with the no viewfinder/hold the camera out in front of you thing and bifocals don't make that any easier.

And then my S100 was a Black Friday Special for only $229 + free shipping so that pushed me into buying it
