Let me start off by saying that I searched "budget camera" and came up with a lot of SX260HS and S100 suggestions. Thanks, but that is too much camera here.

My daughter is looking for a new camera. I told her to buy me a 5D3 and she can have 60D! She wants something a bit smaller than a gripped 60D. Anyway....

Her requirements are:
$200 absolute max budget.
must be pocket-able, no bridge or superzooms
no manual controls required.
no really long zoom required.
no raw required.
she has HD video camcorder, so video not required.
no brand loyalty at all. Whatever works.

I looked around and there are exactly 72 kazillion cameras that meet her qualifications. Is this just a matter of 'pick the pretty one' and be happy, or is there a real difference at this level? She just want to be able to snap some shots of her 3 year old son.

In opinion, the best compact camera under $200 with those requirements
is the Nikon Coolpix P310. Wide 24mm lens and a large max f/1.8 aperture.

Gee, as you said, anything will do. Just tell her ***not*** to install the software that comes with the camera. Supremely annoying stuff. EVERY time you download pictures, it creates a new subdirectory. In addition, unless you use THEIR software, Explorer cannot "see" the pictures. So, after a while, you have a nightmare of subdirectories, with photos you cannot browse in Explorer.

When you plug in and turn on your camera, tell her, it appears in Explorer as another disk drive. You can open the folder, go to View -> Thumbnails, and you'll see the pictures. You can then select those you want to copy, delete, move, etc, just like any other file. If you already have subdirectories created, you can drop them in. A lot better than proprietary software subdirectories with names like 2A365C;12-8-12.

Politics is a game of lies. He who tells the best lies the best, wins.

Thanks for the input. As I figured, just about anything in the price range will do. Buffumjr, I've gotten her in the habit of just putting SD card in her computer and putting the files she wants, where she wants them. It is just easier that way.
