Official Automotive Rigs - DIY Thread

The rig does have a bit of bounce when you actually drive the car, will try some more this week pushing the car as it's quite stable then.Also just got a Variable 9-stop ND filter an extra Manfrotto suction cup and got my cactus wireless trigger working so don't need to use timer anymore, that was damn irritating..

A Few from a recent shoot for a client

I've been dying to do some rig photography, but I'm very new as to what I need to complete one.. I threw this together just now, will this plus some sort of boom (which I'm planning on getting from a hardware store or similar) work good as a rig?

2x Manfrotto Pump Cup With 16mm Baby Swivel Spigot (F1000)
3x Manfrotto Super Clamp 035
1x Manfrotto Magic Arm with Camera Bracket

Would this do? Also, how long would the boom have to be, if you experienced people would guesstimate, to get some nice shots with 24mm on a FF? I'm planning on getting the Samyang 14mm 2.8 sometime in the future, but I need the rig first, and cannot afford both the rig and lens at the same time

Curious for those of you who do automotive and/or rig shots .. I recently upgraded from a 7D with 10-20mm Sigma lens and got the 5D3.. the 10-20 is unusable on this camera, so I sold it.. I currently have the 24-105 f/4L is lens.. and am looking for a new wide-angle lens to use for creative automotive stuff.. I'm looking at the Canon 17-40 f/4L, but I'm also debating the Sigma 12-24 lens... I like the fact that the L lens has typical L-weatherproofing and it can accept filters.. the Sigma is not weathersealed, and because the front element protrudes, it cannot take a filter (I always run a UV filter to protect against things hitting my lens when shooting at the drag strip)..

Curious if any of you have either of these lenses and what your thoughts are.

Well with rig shots you typically want to use filters like a ND and or a CPL so that would throw the Sigma and Tokina(same problem as the Sigma) out. Your choice really is between the 17-40L f4 or the 16-35L f2.8

Let me know how the Variable ND works, saw a few people saying they dont work well with rig shots but i cant really think of any reason why they wouldn't...

I would look at the 16-35 2.8L i would say its my 2nd most used lens, only downside is its my only 82mm lens so gets its own sets of filters..

You will want an ND filter in most cases for rig shots so thats one major plus for the Canon.

I use a 17-40 for all my rig shots including the one posted a couple of pages back - no complaints at all!

Nice shot, but would be better with a bit of a crop IMO.

Thanks guys... I ended up with the 17-40 f/4L ... I couldn't justify spending twice as much on the 16-35... it just arrived today.. now... about a rig.... hmm
