He's our second little Coone, but let me tell you....The hair situation on his older brother is nuts!

So in one outing, I found two things about my precious 5D3 that are steps back wards. Both having to do with the same subsystem, AF points.

( I post this here for 5D3 owners to discuss rather than a new thread that will invite trolls and fanboys due to "dissatisfied" aspect of thread title :) )

Last night I shot my first dance in years.. just my kids a performing arts school and of year recital, nothing fancy, but I had to dust off some old skills.

It was my first time using the 5D3 in this way.

Two issues,
1- the lack of lighting AF point in a dark theatre is simply brutal. I've missed this in my normal shooting, but man this is hard shooting at a dark costume etc.. You simply do not get to see where the AF point is. (hopefully I'm missing something? Can I turn this on somehow?)

2- This is more about FF vs. crop, but with my 1D bodies in the past, the AF point farthest to the right, or in portrait orientation, the top most one, was always in the absolute perfect spot for framing a full length shot of a dancer tightly with a prime. Put the AF point on the face, and shoot, and everything is perfectly framed. I remember running into this with a 1Ds in the last, the same AF array is a smaller percentage of the image area, and thus farther from the edges of the shot,. If I use the same technique, I have many feet of wasted image above the dancers head... and I seemed more likely to cut the dancers feet off.

I have more pixels, so I will clearly need to frame things loser and just crop after wards, might even improve my keeper ration, but damn if this wasn't a kick in the head.

The dark AF points is a whole other issue, not a matter of getting used to something but what I would consider a full on hard ware failure. (again, unless there is a setting I'm missing?)

AF Menu AF5, VF Display Illumination, ON/Off

I actually prefer the 5D2 AF, yes it's slower, yes it's less accurate, yes it doesn't perform as well in low light, but it was simple and clean and easy to use.
9 points all in the right place, 9 clearly lite up little rectangles that all worked predictably and reliably.
