Photoshop Elements 8 vs PSE 11

I have had PSE 8 for a few years, but I was at Costco yesterday, and bought PSE 11. Is it a value added upgrade over PSE 8? Should I also get Lightroom?

It is a value added upgrade if you are going to use the extra features the PSE11 has over PSE8. Unless there are specific features in 11 that you need I would have bought LR instead. That, of course, presupposes that you shoot in RAW as LR is a vastly better RAW development package than the cut down version of ACR that ships with PSE.

I am thinking of getting Lightroom also. I have been told there are things that LR does better than PSE11. Thanks, rick

LR and PSE do different things. PSE 11 is an upgrade to 8 because of the layer masks, among other things, which come in handy. Like Dan said, the RAW program in LR has more features

With PSE 11 you have layer masks and a very good refine mask function.

Another thing to be aware of when it comes to comparing Lightroom with Elements is the fact that with Lightroom, photo organization became a top priority. Elements has the basic Organizer but the LR organizer is pretty feature-packed and you can't just ignore it like you can with Elements! That fact irritates some folks, although once you get accustomed to working in LR, then the organizational features can be very handy. Of course, that's all alongside of the powerful Raw processor in LR, and so if you shoot Raw LR would be a real plus, but I'd still keep the upgraded Elements to do the kind of work that Elements can do but LR can't!

I have been told that Lightroom besides being a better organizer does a great job when post processing B&W, as opposed to PSE.
