AF Menu AF5, VF Display Illumination, ON/Off

...

Hating to feel completely stupid, but always willing to admit when I am wrong, I was sad to find that I already have this set to "ON"

Thus my concern that this might not be possible,.
But it seems likely that there are more settings I need to execute to make this actually happen?

It NEVER lights and AF point, not even for a second, not even some times.

One thing I did notice, was that I had limited the selectable AF points.. it turns out the outer most are not "cross type" so this was a bad choice :) So I was even further limiting myself!

I double checked, and if you chose any other options than all 6 million AF points, you can't get the far side rows.
On the 1D, this is not an issue.

1- the lack of lighting AF point in a dark theatre is simply brutal. I've missed this in my normal shooting, but man this is hard shooting at a dark costume etc.. You simply do not get to see where the AF point is. (hopefully I'm missing something? Can I turn this on somehow?)

This is something quite a few have complained about.

I take it you were shooting in AI servo?
In One shot, the AF point will flash to confirm focus, I have my DOF button set to switch between AI servo and One shot, when I cant see the point that is being used for focus, I will push the button to quickly check.

The other option is to push the AF select button, all pints light up, but you can see the selected point from the pack, reducing the amount of selection points may help. The points stay lit till you start focusing.

Other than that, I can't offer a better solution.

Took my new-to-me 5D3 out for the first time and absolutely loved it. Was a little disappointed that not all of the AF points were available to the 400mm f/5.6. I really miss the outer points from the 1D3. Guess it's time to start using BBF.

That's something else I don't like.
I thought the 9 point selection would give you the outer most points, but it doesn't. It gives you an inner set of cross type.
So I now use all 61 billion and spend 2 min twiddling the joy stick to switch between them.

Ahhhh, that could explain it why I thought I wasn't seeing them active point the other day.
I seem to remember my 30D does something similar, but the 5D2 always highlighted an active point.
