I think you are fine. Although I can't really compare the noise at the moment (my 1DX is with Canon for product advisory), I think mine made somewhat similar sound...

You assume I have not shot with a 200 f/2.

That sounds pretty loud and probably faulty. I would return it.

Here are the videos as promised. Please note that I am using a shotgun mic and it's pretty sensitive. Watch them both back to back and turn the volume up all the way.

That 200L sounds like what mine sounds like, and mine is defective (needs fix for the 5D3)

It doesn't sound like that for other cameras.

Try on other cameras and you'll notice it's much quieter

Really? That's not good:( I will try to find another body and see if its that loud. Did you listen the zoom? They are actually pretty similar in their noise patterns. My mic was also set to the most sensitive setting.

Yeah definitely try it on another body first to eliminate the 5D3 issues as a cause

Give or take a bit for microphone sensitivity, mine sounds pretty similar (on a 1Dx).

Normal.

Remember the 200L has 5 stops of IS compared to the 70-200L so it's a different IS system.

I just checked my 200 on my 1Ds III and it doesn't make much of any noise that can be heard from behind the camera. With the ear a few inches from the lens barrel I can hear the IS start and the focus motor, but the focus motor is louder than the IS.

My 200's IS starting up doesn't make a sound anywhere near like that.

Where have we arrived when we comment not on the price, weight, handling, IQ, size of a lens but the noise it makes? "quite important..." ?

The "sound" that any mechanized piece of equipment makes is always quite important. You don't really believe that your mechanic relies 100% on the OBDII readout, do you?

Then again, maybe you think that hellacious squeal from under the hood of your car adds character to it?

So is it normal or not? Please listen zoom and prime back to back because with the mic I am using even the zoom will sound loud. You guys are really scaring me and returning a 6000 dollar lens will not be easy without being 100% sure.

Quick update, borrowed my friend's T1i, the IS sounds identical in 2 bodies. So that means its not the 5d3 issue that could be causing the noise. Furthermore, this means the sound is either normal or there is a problem with the lens itself. I will know more tomorrow.

Let's see hands raised by all those people who wish they had such "major" problems to lose sleep over.
