I have become interested in infrared photography and I am wondering if there are others out there who have also become interested enough to have an old DSLR converted for IR. I have an old Canon Rebel Xt that I am considering converting, but I have still not quite decided which filter to have it converted for, but that is, perhaps, another discussion thread. I am interested in hearing from those who have done an IR conversion on a camera , which camera (DSLR or P&S), and which company did it for you. Are you happy with the results? If you would also care to comment on which filter you had inserted in the conversion and why, that would also be of interest.

I've done a couple myself - 10D & 1D2 both using a 720nm IR filter, mainly because they still let a wee bit of colour through so you can do a bit with the processing rather than all in B&W.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I had the same thought as you - which filter would be the best?
I could not decide - partly because I had the wish to test probably very different filters - cause I work as an filter expert at a camera manufacturer.

So I build a unique system to have the infrared filters changeable (external link)but still a bright viewfinder. I love the Hoya 72 filter, but sometimes I love to use a clear filter too. The RG 830 filter has not much use for me at the moment.
Sometimes I even use a 1000x grey filter - with bright optical viewfinder :-)

The camera is a Rebel XT, but I think about doing the same with an EOS 5D.

I own and shoot two IR cameras right now,
One an ancient D60 (6 MP) and a 10MP XT

The XT was done by Lifepixel, and the D60 by a guy that used to do them before there were companies that did it for you.

Both have the same 720nm IR filter, and they are both pretty fantastic. Last I looked, life pixel had halved the price, it's a great deal now.

I am contemplating selling them both for a converter 5D as well :)

One of the things I love about shooting IR, is it is at it's absolute BEST when the sun is out full and blaring around Noon... :)
So if you want to shoot all day, you don;t have to stop when the light gets "bad" just switch to IR :)

Yes, exactly the way I think :)
Noon is no bad time for infrared - but most times bad for visible photography.

I had Lifepixel convert an XT with the 720 nm filter in 2009. They did a great job and I'm still shooting IR with that camera. If I were to do it again, I would use Lifepixel.

I bought a 550D about two years ago specifically to have LifePixel convert it. I went with the super color filter and have been happy with it, even though I don't use it as much as I'd like to.

Lifepixel instructions list for a DIY conversion on many different cameras: http://www.lifepixel.com …ls/infrared-diy-tutorials (external link)

I was looking at these for how to's on removing the anti-aliasing filter from my 7D. Decided to opt for better glass instead of leaving hairs or dust in my otherwise perfect camera.

I have a 30D with the 720 conversion. My only regret is that I should have gone with something that had LiveView focus ability.

I'm considering converting either my G12 or Nex5 to a Super Color / Goldie.

....the best camera is the one you have on you at the time.
