This is the Supermoon rising over NYC Saturday June 22.
I am not at all pleased with this shot for several reasons. The second day of summer, it was still daylight and too light out for a good picture of the moon. The air was not clear, there were some gray clouds in the sky and there was haze in the air (which is why the focus appears so soft). I knew where and when the moon would be rising; I was at this location waiting for it to come up well before it rose above the horizon, but because of the haze, and the daylight, the moon was not even visible until moments before I took this shot -- it was not visible at all when it cracked the horizon. I had hoped to zoom in much closer with a great big moon right near the buildings, but by the time it was visible, it was so far from the horizon, I had to pull way back to frame it. -- maybe next year.

Tagging thread. Will post mine soon. Busy week, I haven't had a chance to look at what I captured yet.. But I only had less than 10 mins before the clouds ate it up here in SD.

I agree Ron, at first glance there were things about this image that struck me as not natural....

trailguy, how'd you compose this image?

The background is all natural, one shot, and I simply added the moon to it from another shot. The original moon shot had a bunch of distracting motorboat activity.

mtbdudex , back when a hand full of us old timers were able to persuade this forum into having a Astronomy section we were so proud of the accomplishment to finally have a section dedicated to astronomy images taken with DSLR cameras . But over the time the moderators have not helped us to keep this section as meant to be . As if "Ok , there you go , now don't bother us anymore and put your BigBoy pants on and take care of it yourself " . Since then gradually over time so many are doing astronomy artwork that a lot of images are just fake and that's all they are worth anymore .

It takes the fun out of what astronomy really is suppose to be . Oh we've complained or at least I have and it's like "You asked for it , don't bother us " . Now don't get me wrong , there has been a lot of great beautiful images posted here over the years but when people like to come in and start something as a joke just to irritate real astronomy buffs that are trying to get people interested for the right reason it just makes me mad  .

IF people would fess up front and tell the truth to start with there would be a lot less headaches and more getting along and agreeing . But when you take a picture of clouds and see something that looks like something from a TV show and ask WT BLANK is this and you get more pages with answers than any thread in the section and all the responses are stupid it takes away the true reason of this section .

And this works the same way as when people make fake images adding things that are not there and then post the image and saying "I just took this the other day" , it's just an out right lie ! If they post it and say , "Here's a little Artwork I made by adding this or that" then things would be considered honest and looked at differently . There is a section for artwork , just wish they would use that and let the astronomy section be just what it is meant to be , "TRUE Astronomy Images" .

When explained this way it can be acceptable but it sounded like you took this image exactly the way it looks . The BG is beautiful IMHO but the moon makes it look awkward . Can you post the image of the original BG ?

I know, it's over-sharpened... But it's too late; I had already saved. And it was late. Maybe I'll re-edit it later.

Here's the original BG.
Also, it may be 'false', but I have made the composite look a little more real. What do you think?

With a blue sky the moon is more whiter where I come from it almost blends in with the sky during the day...

I was going to suggest laying the BG image ontop the moon and similar to what you have but what I would do to make it even more realistic is before you composite , take the moon image and change to grayscale then brighten the moon slightly after you GS it then lay your BG image ontop with the clouds very similar to what you have in your re-edit . Go to my website http://home.grandecom.net/~r.hodges/moon.html (external link) and scroll down to the 8th image showing the moon rising at night above the clouds . Your moon should be in comparison to my image but this is at night and my moon was very bright so yours should be maybe 1 or two notches darker . Just kinda play with the layer before you flatten the image to get the moon looking right . Don't use full opacity either or the moon will still look like it's in front of the clouds .
