Lens on the left (his right) is the 600 and the one he's shooting with is the 400 DO. He did have a second body with him...a NIkon D800. ;)

What a nice combination. I am saving for a 600mm to go with my 300mm. I am sure the 400 DO is a really nice lens too. I would want 2 bodies though just to have the option of putting a camera body on each lens.

He was trying to decide which lens would work the best for shooting the 'super moon' and have something of interest in the foreground too. The camera he was using was a 1D IV. I should have brought my 7D along with my 5D3 to test for which combo would work best for me as well.

His 400 DO was surprisingly very light and smaller than my 300 f2.8 IS.

^ Amazing!! Does the 2X slow down the 300mm by a lot? Trying to decide which one I want to get 1.4x or 2x.

Yes the 2x III slows the AF. It does depend on which camera body you are using. My 1D4 drives the lens the fastest because it has a processor just dedicated to AF and the AF accuracy of the 1D series. It is very usable as I have successfully used it on thousands of shots. i prefer to use it on my sidekick. The 1.4 x shows no decrease in AF at all. You will want both TCs depending on the situation. The more you shoot with this lens the better you get at it like anything else.

Butterfly2937..I really like your baby swallow series.

Here's a shot also using a 2x III extender on a 7D. This was shot in full shade this morning so the iso is 3200.

Thanks. I'd love to get a decent shot of an osprey like yours. The shot below is from the only time I've ever even seen one. This was taken at mono lake at 400mm (my apologies for posting this image in the wrong thread). This was taken before I had the 300 lens or tele convertor

100% crop

I wished I had a 500mm with 1.4x or 2x on a 1d4. :) I was shooting with 1d3 and cropped heavily on this photo also.

I love your hummingbird photos what a beautiful shot. Thanks for the nice comments on the swallows. They have been allot of fun to follow and document. Those swallow babies exhibited the cutest little personalities. They were very expressive and entertaining to watch.
