You point any lens into a light source you'll get flare yes this lens is prone to more then most lens but most of the time you can use that to ad sme pop to the picture or at least I do.. Or just clone ot out It's a awesome lens and the fixed 2.8 is why I bought it since I do low light stuff...and that alone is worth the ocassional issue with flare ...At 16mm it has minor distortion which is pretty easily fixed in lr4

Yes, it is. Big enough so that I don't use it in daylight. Version 2, apparently, still has the same problems.

Just look back through this thread and you'll see lots of examples. (Start at the top of this page. Flare that would be very difficult to clone out.) Then look through the equivalent Canon 10-22 thread.

It is prone to flare, but I never had much of a problem with it. You just have to be mindful of it when shooting on sunny days. After a while using this lens you learn to position yourself in relation to the sun to minimize the chance of flare.

In other words, miss out on 50% of possible shots.

Exactly, you summed it up perfectly.

In other words, with a bit of practice anyone with an ounce of photographic skill can pull great results from this lens even on a sunny day.

Here's another shot from that same day. This one flared a bit, but I managed to keep it in the bottom of the frame where it could easily be cropped it out.

Taken during some local King Tides last month in South Australia. They are a day apart and the second is about half an hour earlier.

I don't think it even requires a whole ounce. It's one of the first things that beginners learn - 'You must have the sun behind you for a good picture'. It's also one of the first things that people with a whole ounce of skill learn to ignore.

Sometimes it's also impossible to move to get the sun in that 'ideal' position, like when standing on top of a sand dune. LINK (external link)
