Hey!
I've finally put my pennies together after a loooong time to get a EF 70-200L IS II as well as a 2x extender (so I can have a 400mm f5.6) but I have kind of hit a decision wall...

My option is to buy brand new in both cases but
1 - From Amazon with 1yr guarantee
2 - from eBay (Hong Kong) seller 5yr guarantee

I have purchased from the eBay guy before and no complaints but I might get dinged for taxes and its coming up to around the same price (without import taxes) so my question is to you guys who already own the lens... I know this can be expensive to repair if something goes wront with it:
Has it given you any problems after 1 year of regular use?

Thanks!

i would buy from amazon. although i bought mine from ebay, amazon costumer service rocks... if the price is about the same for you. go with amazon imo.

5y service from ebay seller. its prolly from their "own" service lab.
i wouldnt let them fix my lens. i would trust my lens only to canon

Yeah. 5 year service isn't a deal breaker. That company might disappear in 5 years! It wouldn't be part of canon's standard guarantee.

Hey!

Trust me, if I met Amazon customer service personally I would hug them! You dont have to sell me on how awesome they are , I know! If I have a problem in the first year from Amazon Iwont even waste a second thinking I was not "covered".

Statistically, I know electronics dont give problems in the first 2 year, I'm worried about the other 3...

I bought both the 50mm f/1.4 and 24-105mm f/4L from this same seller over a year back, they have been in business for a few years, good rep, I dont think they are going anywhere soon.

If the lens is stolen my home insurance will cover it, mechanical failure... and I'm screwed.
So question still stands:
-Have you guys had any problems with your 70-200 lens after the first year or two and if yes, what was it?

Had mine since they came out no issues, hundreds of thousands of pictures (I do sports) gets banged around a bit as well. Lots of sports togs have them and give them quite a beating. Very durable.

I can't say much since I have only owned my 70-200 F4 since last month. But based on the date code, it was manufactured in Nov 1999. I have some wonderful shots I have taken with it and it is a 13 year old lens.
I would say the Mk II which was only introduced in April 2010 would be just fine, or it would be an issue in the first year and you would be covered to get that resolved.

Just know this about Amazon though, their packaging SUCKS. The box might be in such a bad shape, these guys have no concept of an "L" glass. You will see a big difference working with a place liek B&H or Adorama. Amazon is just an online Walmart, that's all. They don't care what they sell or how expensive what they sell is. They will package a $20 toy better than a $2000 lens and I am not joking about that.

Check out buydig, they have a 5% instant rebate going on right now, and they're an authorized seller of canon.

I have a 23 year old EF lens that still works great!

Free Hoya UV as well for some extra protection if so desired.

I bought my 70-200 II from Amazon, and I'll continue to buy my lenses that way. Their ordinary customer service is excellent, and is extraordinary for expensive purchases like these.
