Hey guys i bought the 24-70 2.8 MK II last week, and at first i noticed the zoom ring was tight and there was a clicking noise. I have read a lot of people had this issue but is it going to be detrimental to my lens? should i try and return it for another copy? also there is a slight "squeak" sound sometimes going from 28 to 24mm.

If it was me I would return it for another copy. For that price I better not have any clicks or squeaks. :) I have that lens and mine is as smooth as can be.

How smooth? I just received mine yesterday. I was honestly kind of surprised how much more plastic it had comparable to the Nikon 24-70 and the other white canon lenses I've used. I don't have any clicking, but I can't say that I would call the zoom smooth. It's not quite as swishy as some of the non L lenses, but it definitely feels less smooth than the Nikon and the Canon 70-200 2.8 II I have here. The 70-200 I can use one finger and smoothly adjust the zoom. If I try the same thing with the 24-70 it stickslike plastic on plastic friction. No clicks though and I don't have too much of an issue with the plastic since it's lighter.

The clicking noise is alot less noticeable after ive been using it for the past week but when i first received it the zoom ring was very tight and the clicking sound was noticeable. but that has loosened up a bit and feels fine now, its just that squeak going from 28-24 thats annoying. try zooming from 28-24 several times and see if there is any squeaking sound on your copy or if its just my lens

I don't hear anything that resembles a squeak. Just what I think is friction on the barrel extending causing a bit of noise.

edit* Not to hijack your own thread from you, but I see you have the 70-200 II and since we are talking about noises. Is it generally accepted that the chirping sound from the IS starting and stopping is normal? It surprised me earlier so I searched a bit and got mixed results with people saying it was indicating a bad IS system and others saying it was perfectly normal.

Mine is very smooth. There is no sticking at all. It does get a little tighter at the long end when zooming but that is about it. I can use thumb and finger and go through the range with no issues but like I said it gets a little tighter as it gets to 70.

hmm mine definitely squeaks, but it is a sharp copy so i'm a bit torn haha.

Yeah the IS on the 70-200 mkII is pretty loud, it is very much normal, i have had no problem with my IS and it makes the same noise.

Yeah definitely don't hear that on my copy. Can you tell where on the lens it's squeaking? Not sure what I'd do with that since it might just go away over time. Then again, it would not be fun if it got any worse.

on closer inspection it seems like the noise is coming from the zoom ring itself but it only happens when fully zoomed out. hmm thats my thought, i don't know if it will just go away with time (like the stiffness and the clicking noise on zooming) or if something isn't right in it.

I'd say get a replacement or send it in to canon in which they will fix it for free since it's under warranty. you just have to pay shipping to send it in.

I dont live that far from canon so i guess i could drop it off to them to fix. But usually how long do canon take to fix lenses? as i need it in a week or two!

Yeah taking it back to the store tomorrow, they said they have to assess it first (part of their company policy) but shouldn't be a problem getting a replacement! get to open a brand new lens again ;)
