Last year it was my Sigma 18-50, this year (if I go) it'll be the 24-105 and my Yashica 50/1.4 plus the EOS-M with the 22mm ;)

Boy, you guys make me feel like the odd-man-out. When my wife and I go on vacation, we consider that "us" time. As such, the goal is to pay a lot more attention to her, than to my photography habit (OOPS, hobby). If I take a camera at all, it is an SX260HS. She doesn't want to "waste" her vacation waiting for me to set up and get "the shot". I don't want to spend several thousand dollars to spend time with my wife, only to spend it with a camera.

In a similar vein, once a year we take a group of children (nephews, nieces, grandkids) to a Cubs game and a day in Chicago. One time I took a DSLR; real mistake. I spent the day trying to get 'good shots' of this and that. Know what I missed? The Cubs game and the day in Chicago with people I love!

I refuse to let my hobby get in the way of my life. I get some really good snaps of these events and occasions with the P&S. I leave my SLR gear at home when on "vacation". From time to time, I'll take a film camera, an 28 mm f/2.8 lens and one roll of film. That limits my time and makes me "want the shot" enough to interrupt the day. Take a P&S or buy some postcards. You'll enjoy the vacation, and your loved ones, even more.

EDIT:
EveryDayGetaway,
I just noticed your comments about the c/y stuff. My film camera and lens of choice above is the FX-3 S2K and 28 2.8. Wonderful little setup.

If the holiday (trip, getaway, etc.) is family/vacation oriented and photos are secondary, I take the S90.
If photos are a priority or main purpose of the trip then I take as much of my kit as space allows.

Canon M6ii (black) • Canon M6ii (silver) • EF-M 22 • EF-M 32 • EF-M 11-22 • EF-M 18-150 • EF 35 f/2IS • EF 40 f/2.8 • EF 85 f/1.8 • EF 100 f/2.8L macro • EF 16-35 f/4L IS • EF 70-200 f/4L IS

Thanks for the backup on that one. I was beginning to feel like the Lone Ranger.

I guess not having kids makes me a little more selfish... to me a vacation is about getting away to do what you enjoy, for me that's photography and my girlfriend knows this. We still have our date nights and days when we're out together, but some form of a camera is always with me. It doesn't mean I'm obsessed with taking pictures of everything. Some days I'll cary my DSLR with me all day (won't happen now that I have the M) and only take one or two pictures, but I like to have the option there for me.

24-105 or sigma 50 are my one of my two lenses plus a yn622 and 430ex when I really need to pack light. Most of the time tho I bring my camera bag with more than I need.

What do you think of the 28-300?

I was thinking it would be a great travel lens, just bring along an UWA and fast prime and you'd be set for just about anything and it would cover most things so you'd hardly need to do any lens swaps. From the I've seen the IQ looks pretty good for a super zoom, and the fact that it can take the place for the most part of a 24-70/105 and 70-300 combo the cost seems to the only deterrent. Maybe if I start travelling a lot again I'll have to pick one of these up, at least for the destinations that keeping gear to min is important(this lens would have been great when I hiked the Inca trail).

I don't know I only ever used the Tamron VC version and it was average, but way better than a compact camera option. Would like to try the Canon but price puts me off, even used they hold value well. As the missus has the old 28-300 from Tamron I think i will take that for the next holiday.

Yeah I imagine Tamron 28-300 is similar to the Sigma 18-200 I bought a long time ago for my crop bodies as a travel 1 lens solution but then didn't any more of those trips like I had been doing were it would have been nice(I used take 3-4 weeks to one country and go all over and try to see everything so traveling light was preferred).

The 28-300L from what little I could find on it seems to be one of those superzooms that does surprising well IQ wise. I haven't bother really looking into one yet as travelling abroad has been something hard to budget and/or find time off so(being self employed it's usually either no time or no money) we've only gone to places we can drive to so taking the whole/larger kit isn't an issue.

Aside from maybe a trip to a dive location(which will have at least UWA and macro in the UW kit so I could just bring a normal long zoom if needed for topside) our next travels over seas will be to visit friends/family so bring a large kit won't be any issue aside form potentially getting charge for extra weight on flights.

Went to Central America in January. Ended up in Belize for a few days of rest at the end.

I took a 7D with a 24-105, 11-16, 50 1.8.

Never again.

Next trip will be with a Fuji (a-xpro1 or x100s). I won't miss the DSLR a bit.

I have a feeling my DSLR (current or future) is going to be either in a studio or connected to a big white lens for wildlife work. Never for holidays.

what a joke... my backpack was packed with all my stuff.... my father in law also took the same taxibus to the airport, our suitcases were allready downstairs at 2 after midnight, he rang and we opened the door, he helped putting the suitcases in the bus.... meanwhile we were shutting down doors,... my father in law rang a second time, this wasn't necessary as he knew we were ready and doors were open, damn pushy old one! :) and I forgot my backpack with all my material while hurring!!! it wasn't necessary to be pushy as we were on time. Now I can lend his budget 1000D + standard kitzoom & telezoom for the last 3 days of our holiday, damn!!!! :(

I guess you have to ask why you bought your DSLR in the first place. Those places you visited are some of the most scenic in the world. If you don't use your gear in those places, where do you plan on using it?

I travel to Hawaii a few times a year and always take my full gear outfit. I have large prints from Hawaii hanging in various places in my home. I've made numerous coffee table books of my Hawaii travels.

I cannot think of a better place to drag your gear to than some exotic locations. I guess everyone is different, but I still shake my head when I read this.

We are all different. Our children are grown and we have no grandchildren at the moment. When we go away, we both take our cameras with us.... we enjoy shooting together.

I hear ya Hogloff. the "what lenses should I take?" question baffles me.

did you buy all that gear just to shoot the cat and bokey shots in your kitchen :D?

I would take a wide (17-40) and a medium telephoto (70-200). That covers most of my needs.
