As such, the goal is to pay a lot more attention to her, than to my photography habit (OOPS, hobby). If I take a camera at all, it is an SX260HS. She doesn't want to "waste" her vacation waiting for me to set up and get "the shot". I don't want to spend several thousand dollars to spend time with my wife, only to spend it with a camera.

If photos are a priority or main purpose of the trip then I take as much of my kit as space allows. Thanks for the backup on that one. I was beginning to feel like the Lone Ranger.

EverydayGetaway Cream of the Crop More info | Jun 05, 2013 22:35 | #20 I guess not having kids makes me a little more selfish... to me a vacation is about getting away to do what you enjoy, for me that's photography and my girlfriend knows this. We still have our date nights and days when we're out together, but some form of a camera is always with me. It doesn't mean I'm obsessed with taking pictures of everything. Some days I'll cary my DSLR with me all day (won't happen now that I have the M) and only take one or two pictures, but I like to have the option there for me. I was thinking it would be a great travel lens, just bring along an UWA and fast prime and you'd be set for just about anything and it would cover most things so you'd hardly need to do any lens swaps. From the I've seen the IQ looks pretty good for a super zoom, and the fact that it can take the place for the most part of a 24-70/105 and 70-300 combo the cost seems to the only deterrent. Maybe if I start travelling a lot again I'll have to pick one of these up, at least for the destinations that keeping gear to min is important(this lens would have been great when I hiked the Inca trail). I don't know I only ever used the Tamron VC version and it was average, but way better than a compact camera option. Would like to try the Canon but price puts me off, even used they hold value well. As the missus has the old 28-300 from Tamron I think i will take that for the next holiday. http://natureimmortal.blogspot.com

Yeah I imagine Tamron 28-300 is similar to the Sigma 18-200 I bought a long time ago for my crop bodies as a travel 1 lens solution but then didn't any more of those trips like I had been doing were it would have been nice(I used take 3-4 weeks to one country and go all over and try to see everything so traveling light was preferred).

I have a feeling my DSLR (current or future) is going to be either in a studio or connected to a big white lens for wildlife work. Never for holidays. I guess you have to ask why you bought your DSLR in the first place. Those places you visited are some of the most scenic in the world. If you don't use your gear in those places, where do you plan on using it?

I travel to Hawaii a few times a year and always take my full gear outfit. I have large prints from Hawaii hanging in various places in my home. I've made numerous coffee table books of my Hawaii travels. I cannot think of a better place to drag your gear to than some exotic locations. I guess everyone is different, but I still shake my head when I read this. I hear ya Hogloff. the "what lenses should I take?" question baffles me. http://instagram.com/edraderphotography/

I would take a wide (17-40) and a medium telephoto (70-200). That covers most of my needs. ***********
