I'm not sure why Canon doesn't do that. Maybe they want to reserve it for their "C" cameras, maybe the codec can't support it with the buffer rate,...does ML allow for 1080/60 when installed??

Sony does it on their cameras so I wonder what the difference is.

maybe cause half the people in here are complaining that there's video at all on the camera :)

Rumor of Release

Spoke yesterday to Adorama rep calling to talk about my 50D trade, and he said the 70D was listed as a 7-21 arrival.

Hey, don't shoot the messenger! I was only repeating what I asked him to repeat twice. Everyone loves a juicy rumor.;)

Where? "This item will be released on September 15, 2013."

Edit: I hope it releases early so we can see what this thing is really about, especially ISO wise.

Hmm- I guess it changed...the posts #19, and #29 in this thread led to a link that used to say August 15, at least 4 days ago they did

This new sensor tech looks promising. The on chip Phase detection should be cool if it works. I can't wait to see the RAW images. The preview is up at DPreview if anyone cares to read it. BRING BACK THE JOYSTICK TO THE 50-60-70D LINE CANON !

Here is the "tech explained" page to the preview. Click here to read (external link)

Underexposing (intentionally) is often very necessary in the type of photographhy I do. When I underexposed 7D images, the noise grain was noticeably worse than when I intentionally underexposed 50D images to the same extant. Perhaps for the type of photography you do, you do not need to underexpose often, but if you have, have you noticed the difference between the way the two bodies handle noise grain when shooting at ISO 400 and ISO 800?

Tom Reichner wrote in post #16096420 (external link)
My wildlife subjects are often darker than their surroundings, so I need very much to expose for the highlights so that I capture detail in the bright areas. Sunlight is often "absorbed" by fur/hair, but reflected off of leaves, blades of grass, water surfaces, etc. Plus parts of my images sometimes show the sky in the background, and I don't want it blown out. With wild animals, there is no time to mess with graduated filters, etc.

Also, sometimes some of the surroundings are much darker than other parts of the surroundings. More than the dynamic range of my sensors can handle. Hence, I need to expose for the highlights in these instances, as well.

Tom is exactly right. I, and many others, use the 7d for wildlife. Underexposing to get certain elements of the frame looking proper absolutely increases noise to a massive extent.
Overexposing blows out whites (like fur on deer or fox, feathers on birds)
So, we need a camera that can greatly reduce noise, not one that has more MP.

Yes they said 8/15 but it changed to 9/15. Best Buy is also showing 9/15. Canon USA's shop is showing an estimated ship of 9/23, dunno if they have already sold enough that they have pushed it out or what. Amazon's pre order page says that you'll get in line but they aren't sure when it might ship.

It may be that Canon has sort of learned their lesson about availability and is now shipping to retailers with instructions not to release until a certain date thus insuring a much better supply at launch. So both may be right. Retailers might be getting shipments in 8/15 while general sales starts 9/15

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Any thoughts on pre-ordering? I usually wait until the dust settles before I jump on new technology, but I am overdue for an upgrade and I wouldn't mind having the 70D in my hands sooner rather than later.

Just wondering if anyone has had issues in the past with early production runs.

I waited for the T2i for some time because it had full HD video, where the T1i did not. I bought it the day it was first available. It dropped in price a few months later, but for my first dslr I was happy. Since I am camera-equipped, I'm tempted to wait for the reviews on the 70d. Especially since the 70d has a new sensor, new focus system, new SD card compatibility, somewhat limited lens support for the new focus system, the fantastic reviews that the EOS M had...
