I'm just got an old 50mm super takumar 50mm lens and noticed that some of the pictures had this blue haze in the middle.

is this normal for old lenses? The lens performs really well except for when there is a bright light source at the top of the image.
Here's a link (external link) to a few more samples where the haze is visible and where it is not

Not very pronounced, but probably a Hotspot - internal reflections between camera sensor and probably plane lens surfaces. Moden lens designs avoid plane lens surfaces because of this (part of optimization for digital photography).

It looks like a type of lens flare, as ZoneV said. Do you have the Super Multi-Coated version of that lens? That's what I have, and I've never noticed this flare. The multi-coatings may suppress this, but I'm not sure.

Might just not be a good copy. Occasionally with vintage lenses you will stumble across a dud. Try a lens hood to see if it is flare and that may help.

Are you using any filters on the lens? If so, try removing it/them.

Are you using a lens hood? If not, try using one (even if you make one out of black paper to try).

The lens manufacturers had to step their designs when moving from fil to digital - all because the film is dark and reflects back much less light than the digital sensor. So changes to the shape of the lens elements. Better coating. More work with dark baffles.

Many older lenses do flare when pointed at a birght scene (the sky) and of course the sun. I have a dedicated hood on each of my lenses. Gene

I'm not sure what copy I got but based on some readings I did, the lens' specs fits the first versions made by Pentax. It doesn't say anywhere if it's SMC.

No i'm not using any filter. I haven't tried shooting with a hood, I'll try that and see if there will be improvements.

Look closely at the elements. Perhaps there is small area of fungus that is scattering light?

Yeah, that was the first this I checked but the elements are very clean except for very minute scratches at the back element. I've talked to the camera shop and they said I can have it replaced anytime. So I'll drop by over there and test other copies. I really like this lens so I hope I can find a better one.
