Some day I need to make the 'pilgrimage' to Texas. I have ancestors who came to Texas from Tennessee in 1835 and settled near Gonzales, Tx.

This is my 3rd great grandfather:

He Overpaid for the Land by at least $500

I mean, we are talking 1830's

I'm no land expert but perhaps the Salinas land grant was prime real estate at the time. Here is an interesting story about Jose Salinas, the land grant owner, and that he wouldn't take gold for the land:

Jose Maria Salinas of San Antonio de Bexar who had received the four leagues (17,712 acres) as a special grant from the Supreme Government of the State in 1827,agreed to sell the land for $3,000 in cash. Salinas would not accept the gold which the leader Hodges offered, so they had to travel to New Orleans to exchange it for Mexican silver dollars. With $3,000 in silver loaded on pack mules, and with several young men of the Gonzales area as guards, Hodges traveled the old road to San Antonio, and on August 1, 1835, a deed was signed by Salinas and his wife, Terresa Arriala, transferring the four leagues to James Hodges.

"Old Jose Salinas" and his lost buried silver.

As the story is told, at the time Jose Salinas sold his lands, there was already unrest in San Antonio, and the threat of war between the Texas settlers and the Government of Mexico. Fearing that his recently acquired $3,000 in silver would be stolen or lost, Old Salinas, telling no one of the exact location, buried the bags of silver somewhere within the walls of the San Jose Mission. Soon thereafter, and before he could reveal the hiding place to his family, Salinas took sick and suddenly died. It has been said that over the years, many a hole has been dug on the grounds of the old mission. However, the silver has never been found.

Very nice Jon. Did you happen to get any shots when the sun was hitting the valley floor too?

Thanks Gene. No, that shot is the first one taken when we got there and I felt lucky to get the sun on the ridge though clouds would have been nice. However, I did manage to get the full moon lighting up the valley floor....

Thanks Todd! It's a wonderful subject and I'm going to shoot it again but it is a real challenge to get to! Aside from being in the middle of no where the last 4 miles is on perhaps the worst gravel road I've ever been on. Plan accordingly.

Oak creek West Fork (AZ) apple farm

Hiked OCWF last week and got a few OK pics. The area now occupied by the trailhead and parkinglot used to be an apple 'farm' many decades ago. Because it's now a state park, the remains are treated gently...sort of like the remains of Bodie, CA. All shot with 6D and Zeiss ZE 18mm.

The chickencoop.
