YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAA!

I was contemplating buying a monitor for focus or whatnot. I was thinking small hd.
Instea of doing that, I thought I'd try the cheap way out first. So, I went to my nearest electronic store and picked up a Nexus 7 16GB for $169.99
Then I searched for HOURS to find a micro USB to female USB A OTG plug to hook my camera up to this thing. In the entire Chicago are there was ONE store that had this item which was Frys. The cord cost me $6
Then I went and bought the DSLR Controller app. I believe it was $8. I hooked my camera up and I've got Live view!!!
Now, I was quite skeptical because these controllers are usually VERY sluggis(think eos software that comes with camera) but this tablet shows the image damn near instantaneous very smooth it's unbelievable. I bought this anticipating taking it back for not working how I hoped it would. Now I guess I'm out of my money because I'm keeping it. So, for those wanting a monitor for focus and just an all around bigger view(7") this entire setup only cost me $184(really $214 after taxes)
I have TWO issues.
1) it doesn't work with my iPad. Idiot Apple smh. Would have saved me $200
2) while recording in crop mode(raw video) the image that ML shows me(the hacked one in black in white for the correct field of view) shows up in normale color on the tab(not a bad thing) BUT its waaaaay to the side. What I see on the cam and on tab(in crop mode) are two different things.
Any ideas on how I might be able to over come this anyone?

If anyone is curious. I'm using a 5D3. I'm soooooo glad I didn't just dish out the money to smallHD
I sound like a commercial but I promise, neither of these products are mine(except for the ones that I just paid for)

Bought a CamRanger instead, use it wirelessly with my iPad. Use live view, can focus with my iPad by touching the screen. Also set up for HDR exposures and focus stacking and much more.

Posted a question relating to this but got limited response... Maybe people are realising the potential?
I got a used Lilliput 668GL monitor and combine this with the 24mm TSE II so that I can easily see effect of tilt on the 7 inch screen. Monitor is fixed to tripod leg with Manfrotto super clamp and extension arm .... I love it

I use this for video, so the ability to do any of that I don't care anout(although it does) this has focus peaking, crop marks, and the most important feature. It mirrors the cameras LCD in almost a PERCECT real time with no jerkiness or lag.

And cheaper than CamRanger (by almost half).

and they also tell you how to get the wifi capabilities for $100 so you can do wifi anywhere.
I REALLY REALLY wish that my iPads could do something like this. F*cking apple!

PS. I just looked up camranger, and the latency is HORRIBLE! You'd NEVER be able to focus on a moving object with that

But CamRanger is the only product I know that circumvents Apple's hamstringing of the iPad. Considering Apple doesn't want you to do ANY of this, the CamRanger has a lot of useful features.

If you want all those features and more for considerably less, check out a cheap Android tablet.

I'm a HUGE apple fan. Everything I own is apple up until yesterday. I'd rather something that works good than something that works horribly. If that thing also happens to be cheaper, I'm all for it! That's what I got with this android.
Maybe the cam ranger is good if you're only into photography. But for video, all of the useful features mean nothing if you can't truly see what you're capturing in real time. And at the price point that cam ranger is asking... There should be no such issue.

I took my wife's Kindle Fire installed Jellybean 4.1 and dslr controller app. Makes a nice little Android tablet. It works great with dslr controller and 1ds mkIi and 1dv.

ps. I'm a Mac guy. I have an iPhone, ipad, ipad mini and Imac. Go figure. As a tablet Androids suck compared to IPads. They do however make great monitors and remote camera controllers. Screen resolution is good too.

Don't forget. DSLR Controller is still a Beta app. Things can only get better from here. I actually have my Android tablet mounted right to my camera using some Go-Pro quick mounts. The cable, BTW is a OTG cable, readily available on Amazon for above $ 5.00.
Apple needs to get their #%^* together with this issue.

Really interesting and informative post BTW. I don't think a lot of photogs are aware that this is available.

That cable... Took me FOREVER to find. I bought the tablet thinking it wouldn't work as smooth as it did and was going to end up taking it back. So I wanted to purchase the cable in store in stead of online. I search everywhere in the greater Chicago area. Couldn't find it and almost bought it on amazon(would have taken 3-4 days to ship) I checked Frys. I had to drive an hour to get there, but I made it before closing! Cost me 6 bucks.
I don't like the guy that made the app because now I'm out of $200 that I had no intention of spending, but he redeemed his self because he saved me about $500 that I would have spent with smallHD

How long have you been using this combination? Or did my post trigger you to install jelly bean and try it?

First of all. Here is a you tube link that helped a lot. http://youtu.be/mUzRqP​3RAmU I actually made a bracket which I used to attach the tablet to the side of my camera.
You can get the Go Pro self adhesive quick releases, which work nicely. A company called Drift Innovations sells all kinds of mounts. That's what I used.
I've been using this combination for about two months now. Your post just re- Kindled my interest. No pun intended.

It's a great tool. I use this in wildlife photography. A lot of times I have my 600 mkIi locked in on a perched Eagle. I'm trying to get that perfect launch shot. The Dslr controller allows me to sit and wait and then hit the shutter at the right time without constantly looking through the view finder. Then I can review and check exposure etc.

I bought the OTG cable on Amazon. Use it with my S4 and DLSR Controller all the time - it's sweet.

Recently moved to Chicago from SoCal and didn't know Fry's is out here. Sweet!
