What kind of compatibility issues are you having with the Plus III! I thought the Plus III was just a dumb trigger.

Same here, I have a Plus III and it works great with my 5D III. Have to admit I mostly use it to trigger my 5DIII from my Sekonic 758DR light meter but have used it to trigger other PW so I'm not sure what problems your having. Can you explain more?

the issue is that they miss fire pretty often, from 10 shots the might be 4 miss fires.

Sure you are not thinking of the flex ttl units rather than the dumb +III?

My thoughts.

I've had Plus II's and currently have 4 Plus III's and they're one of the most reliable "dumb" triggers.

I have yet to missed a shot due to the triggers.

Check the batteries. My plus II does that even thought the test button works and the red light lit but misfire some times. Changing out fresh batteries helped.

are you trigger it from the hotshoe or sync cable?
if hot shoe, try to clean the contact point
if sync cable, try to clean the port on the camera side and try to use a different cable
