I arrived in the Dominican Republic last Tuesday and I'll be staying here for the next 5 weeks to look for bugs. During the week, I stay at a cocoa farm which is quite literally a macro photographer's dream. When the WiFi is working (when the power is on) I'll do my best to upload some shots.

Those are pretty awesome shots. Love that boss jumper; he has legs that go on forever!

Insanely jealous!! 6 weeks to look for and photograph insects in a beautiful (and plentiful) tropical location... I'm not sure I can think of anything much better than that at the moment.

Excellent photos. I especially like the boss jumping spider. The assassin is freakishly unique and beautifully captured as wel.

I'm looking forward to more...

Thanks everybody. :) What's nice to know is there is a large species of thread-legged assassin bug in the US. I've found only two though (in NC). There bodies were nearly 2" long each. :)

The two species of thread-legged assassin bugs (the one in the US, and the on photographed above) look very similar, but I know that they are different. The one above is actually segmented in the middle of the thorax. It is a flexible part of the body and it did bend it's thorax on a few occasions. I've never seen any insect with a segmented thorax like that!

Gracias. :) The first two were with a flash, and the 3rd was natural light. Matter of a fact, all were with a flash except for the 3rd and last shots. ;) I prefer using natural light, but in the jungle, it can be sooo dark!
