Canon used to have a yearly photo contest, when economic times were better, that had serious prizes, trip to USA national park, 5D camera + lens, high end printer, etc. Maybe they'll continue it again in a few years. Plus it was free to enter!

Just be careful and read the T & C's thoroughly before you enter.
Most "competeitions" are just simply a rights grab, and you're basically signing over all rights of your image(s) to the competition promoter to do whatever they like with it, including selling it to other parties.
It's a great way for businesses etc to get a stack of images for nothing.

Allen,

That looks like a good contest, with a very legitimate shot of winning some half decent prize money.

But, one thing alarmed me. When looking at the photos that have been entered, when I click on one of the photos and it's page comes up, there is an option you can click on that says "buy photo". I suspect that this means that anyone at all can buy a print of any image entered.

If I want to protect the exclusivity of my work, won't that be compromised if I enter an image in such a contest? I'd like to enter the various competitions they have there, but certainly do not want my work sold unless I am getting a cut of the profits.

I know you entered a competition there, and hence may have some first-hand experience with their image-selling operations. How did this work for you?

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Well, I got very lucky but not quite lucky enough. If you scroll down near the bottom you will see I received a Mark of Excellence Award and there were only 20 Mark of Excellence Awards out of almost 2,000 entries. I really don't enter a lot of contests either. With a Leica and $20,000 I had to give it a try.
Scroll down to next to the last line and it's the floral.

I don't sell there so I'm not sure how it works or if it works well.

You have to click the for sale button and enter an amount for the image to be for sale.
