It has eluded me for over a week but this evening I found my favorite Raptor and it had just caught a Squirrel and was eating it on the ground. Another photographer and I enjoyed photographing it and at one point we were sitting 8' from it. Not the best light but I'm not complaining one bit...for me it was mostly about just being able to sit there and watch it at close range.

1D4, 70-200mm f/4L non IS @ 100mm, 1/250" @ f/4, ISO 1250, handheld, almost full frame.

To give you an idea of what everything looked like the other photographer took some pics with her camera phone. This was before we inched closer to the hawk as it ate the Squirrel.

Sitting 8' from the hawk...it could care less we were there.

I thought every hawk or eagle was programmed to fly away when you got within 2 football fields from them but over the years I've stumbled across a few cooperative ones...this is one of them and I'm taking full advantage of the situation while it's here.

Ditto. See quite a few perched along the highways here but I swear, if you even think about slowing down, they're gone! So I'll make myself content to look at your excellent images. sigh!

Excellent series Duane. You can't wait to open a thread announcing a raptor captured with a 100mm lens! We had a very cooperative raptor around here a couple of years ago and surprisingly (or perhaps not) it was also a Red-tailed Hawk.

Thanks everyone for the comments. This hawk is amazing to say the least...totally wild but unusually tolerant of people.

The photographer and good friend that was with me during this series of images found the hawk this morning and she sent me some pictures after she called me to tell me what happened with the hawk.

She one-upped me this morning because I had joked about having my picture taken with this hawk one day....I couldn't believe what she was telling me on the phone but I guess the pictures prove it.

The hawk allowed her to sit on the bench next to it and they stayed seated together for about 5-8 minutes. The hawk only left because a couple of Blue Jays were attacking it.
