id say you did a good job capturing this...

it really looks more like a M/V than a navy ship...

I agree! I wonder if she was based on the design of a merchant vessel of the era? She has the look of a totally different heritage from maybe the 1950s...

Nice ship, whatever her heritage!

Growing old disgracefully!

Sub sailor? Yes, four boats. Holland was purpose built in 1963 to refit and service the U.S's growing fleet of ballistic missile submarines. Today's Trident submarines are refitted in port, pier side, at either Kings Bay, GA or Bremerton, WA.

USS Holland, an old submarine tender gets pushed into dry dock at Mare Island California to prepare it for its final journey through the Panama Canal and to Galveston TX, where it will be dismantled for scrap. I had no idea this was going on, so I didn't have the right gear with me. I was driving home from the dentist and just saw it happening and had the 7D with the 70-200 in the car. Could have used a bit wider lens and a polarizer to knock down some of the glare. The ship was the first sub tender for Polaris missile subs. Pretty interesting history on Wiki for it.

If my experience is any indicator, that boat will be around for quite some time. You'll have plenty more opportunities to capture her before she takes her last ride. Because there is no longer an operational need for these tenders, their decommissioning is very low priority and can take a significant amount of time to complete.

If you can list all your gear in your sig line, you don't have enough stuff.

There's only two left in operation too.

Hey man do you shoot a lot around this area? I'm PCSing and am at school in Norfolk if you want to go shoot sometime.

Good luck to you. I patrolled in the 70's and 80's until it was no longer fun. Keep in touch.

Thanks for the offer, I'll keep it in mind. I don't get out much though. Been trying to talk my wife into a trip to the zoo. Maybe that'll be the ticket.

But I can pass something off if you like.... When I got here I made contact with the shipyard as I've done some work for other shipyards photographing launches, sea trials and interior shots and they have a launch coming up Nov 7th for the USS Ford (CVN) and was told that if I gave her my info she would get me a press pass..... But I'm leaving Aug 9th lol.

I wanted to see the baby giraffe.

I would really like to see the Ford launched. That sounds pretty cool.
