The Sigma 150-500 is also in your price range.

The IQ might not be as great as the Ls, bu the reach and stabilization is outstanding.

OK not a lot of love for the DO lens, 70-300mm L it is then..

Dean.

I have the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM. I bought it used so I didn't sink a lot of cash into it. It's compact and light. It is relatively sharp . . . though not as sharp as some of my L lenses. Let's just say that I like it but I don't love it.

I'm seriously thinking about the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM. Everything I read says that it is one of Canon's sharpest telephoto zooms. I also like the fact that I can use it with my 2x extender. (I would have a 400mm lens in my kit without hauling around the 100-400mm lens.)

Note that your new 400m won't have auto-focus...

Thanks for the comments guys, ordered the 70-300 L, eventually I intend to buy the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II for photographing my wife show jumping, for now we've taken a step back from horses as we have a 16 week old baby and are already trying for no 2.

Then why not buy the 2.8 II now then you ask? Its Much heavier, much longer, and with a 1.4x convertor to get the nearly the same reach as the 70-300 twice the price, not a combination that i would be wanting to carry on holiday abroad..

Dean.
