Earlier in the year I photographed my sisters dog - my first ever attempt at pet photography (results here). My sister showed some prints to the woman who runs the dogs training and yesterday evening I popped along to a training session.

I emphasized that I was there to see if I have the skill and the tools to capture the action, but if any photos came out ok I'd share them on their FB site.

Well, I surprised myself with the results:

Camera settings
7D + 70-200 IS II 2.8
Tv: 1000
ISO: Auto, 1600 Max.
Focus: AI Servo, AF point expansion
High speed burst

The lens has to take a lot of credit for my success.

C&C welcome on the composition - I was not sure how/where to crop for best effect (show the dog or the environment)

Cheers
Lawrence

Definitely keep doing it! Great captures, much better than the work of some "official agility photographers" I have seen.

Thank you all.

Kpablo - I have to give the speed of the lens the credit for the focus.

Seamus69 - This was apparently the more advanced class

Christian - I'm not a pet owner, but I could see the dogs wanted to be doing this. They even appeared to be asking the owner what obstacle to attempt next - great fun to watch.

CyberCat - I plan to go again and hopefully expand on my keeper rate. I spoke to a friend with regards to being a 2nd at an agility comp, but his work was very strict as they (he and his partner) printed on site straight from the camera card (no PP, no crop) - it's not how I like to work. I'll chat with some dog owners and see what they might like.

vzuptnguyen - Now you mentioned it, they are slightly speckly. I'll have a play.

SJC - Thank you, I'm well pleased with them. I'll try again next week. I have been invited to shoot a competition in a couple of months. I'll see how I get on and maybe I'll take them up on the offer.

Cheers all,
Lawrence

Very nice shots but ISO 1600 noise is pretty noticeable. Great start and good luck!

Great images, certainly for your first time at agility!

1/1000th, f2.8, ISO 1600. You must be either shooting at night or in the UK :)

Coming from an active agility competitor (I run 3 of my own dogs, and handle several for other people), please let me just say wow!! I have hundreds of photos of my dogs doing agility, but these are incredible! Well done!!
