We're getting off topic. I was merely responding to TheLensGuy who seemed to indicate that L lenses are perfect compared to Sigma. I was noting that my 50L was far from perfect out of the box (and easily the worst lens out of the box I have owned). I am quite happy with every lens I own even though a few required MFA. And I do pixel peep.

Is this lens released yet anywhere ? Or does anyone have any hands on experience with it ?
Im still pretty new to all this, recently just got back into the hobby with a 7d and a 200mm f2.8 non is.
and Im looking for another lens with less reach to round out my bag and im very happy with my current selection. Will there be any drawbacks to a sigma lens ?

A few members have the lens already, it's been shipping out slowly from preorders but I think stores are low on stock or keep on selling out.

I ordered mine from buydig on 7/5 and it arrived 7/19. I think they keep selling out of the stock and can't keep up w/ the orders so it's just always on "preorder". Buydig has it with a value package that includes a Hoya NXT UV 72MM filter for the same price with a bunch of other freebies.

Mine is really sharp out of box but I did adjust it to MA +3 on my 7D. No complaints so far, it's amazing. Construction and IQ are stellar imo. Best lens in my bag. I need to take it out to do some more test shots.

If you really want it right now, you'll have to preorder and just wait for it to ship. They'll probably catch up with demand later on.

Its one thing if you had the 17-40 before the more recent offerings became available, but for someone buying a lens now it doesn't make sence. For less than the 17-40, one can buy the 17-50/2.8 OS and get an extra stop, stabilization, an extra 10mm, and sharper images. For a little more, you can get the 18-35 and get over two stops faster aperture, much sharper images and only loose 1mm on the wide end and 5 on the long end. There is also the Tamron 17-50 non VC for much less. The 15-85 is sharper and is essentially the same aperature value over the 17-40 range and is stabilized.

FEChariot, pretty much nailed it...i'm sure you've gotten great photos with the 17-40L on a crop...the thing is, there are other options which will open up more opportunities, be it faster aperture, stabilization, wider, longer...and most over at least a couple of those choices, and are available for cheaper than the 17-40L...

basically any shot done with a 17-40L on a 1.6crop could've been done with a few different crop dedicated lenses...however those crop dedicated lenses can do shots that the 17-40L can't

What if impressing others is part of the job? Am I going to make a $15 million dollar investment based on the word of a guy who takes me golfing in a chipped Civic? No, I am not.

You just made my point. You buy things to impress others people instead of how well they get the job. If you took the time to learn to drive you would do better with the civic then 99% of people can do with a 911. If you took the time to learn photography you could do better with a t2i then most people do with a 5d3.

So, I don't give advice, nor own a 911. Then again. Warren isn't going to be giving you any rides, so wtf are we talking about here?

My point is that you can't cherry pick lens or car stats, compare price, and declare a winner. It's not that simple for everyone. Just because someone is choosing an L over a Sigma, don't assume they're doing so because it has a red ring, and don't assume someone who chooses a Sigma can't afford an L.

I doubt Warren has riced his Ford, btw.
