I see a lot of nice results with the 17-55, but I'm torn between this and the 24-70 II. I know it's twice the cost, but I could be willing to spring for it. I already have a 10-22, so I'm not too worried about the wide end. I also already have a 70-200 f4. Any advice? I've got a 7D.

When I purchased mine, the choice was between the 17-55 and the older 24-70. By the time you added the cost of a hood and bag (both included with the 24-70) to the 17-55; the price difference was negligible. Given that, and the fact that reviews showed the 17-55 was a little sharper, I went with the 17-55, I love it an have never regretted the decision. But in your situation, (and knowing nothing about you except this post) I would probably go with the 24-70 II.

  • 24-70 II beats the 17-55 on sharpness
  • It kills the 17-55 on on overall quality (twist the zoom ring on the 17-55, there is a strange torque at about 24mm -- I thought mine was defective, but that is normal for the lens).
  • You've got the 10-22 which does 17 to 22 as well or better than the 17-55 (except not at f/2.8)
  • the 24-70 is the perfect companion for the 70-200
  • You are not overly concerned about the price difference
  • If there is, even a slight chance of going FF in the future.. the 24-70 will make your life easier.
  • the 24-70 has a nice red ring and an "L" in its name; that wasn't a concern for me but is huge for some (might help resale)
  • Oh yeah.. the 24-70 comes with a hood and bag. ;)
