Yes it was first introduced as an Army Cooperation/observation aircraft in 1936. For that role STOL was considered important. This example is in the configuration used by the SOE for inserting/extracting agents into/from small improvised landing grounds in occupied europe. Hence the big ladder into the rear cockpit andcthe large equipment storage container under the fusealarge. In this role they were based at RAF Tempsford in Bedfordshire. The Lizzie was also used as a target drouge towing aircraft, and actually served with both the USAAF 8th and 9th Air Forces.
