Canon 6D out of the box with LCD fingerprints

Hey guys,

My first post here! I wanted to gather some opinions of some of the "camera pimps" that hang around this forum who have a lot more experience than me with purchasing multiple DSLRs, etc.

I bought a Canon 6D after deciding a full-frame was for me (jump up from a Canon Rebel T5i) and one thing I noticed upon opening the box was that whoever packed the camera in the bubble wrap and cottony sort of paper left a ton of hand-and-fingerprints all over the camera's LCD part. My Rebel on the other hand didn't have any of these sorts of problems.

I was pretty choked considering this thing costs so much money.. you'd think someone would handle it better, or at the very least, Canon would ship the camera with one of these cheap plastic pull-off things...

Since the handling was so shoddy, I'm sort of worried what other kind of stuff has this camera been through? Maybe the goofball who handled it so poorly dropped it? Who knows. The pictures this things takes are quite amazing though, so I don't notice anything actually wrong with it...

Should I be concerned about it? I wiped off the smudges and stuff with some soft issue and mild soap and water and it's all good... but I can't help but feel I got gyp'ed a bit by Canon. Is this sort of thing normal?

Was this a refurb? My 60D refurb came with a thin protective film over the LCD. Was that missing? Have you done one of thecshutter count checks?

I take pride in leaning fingerprints on what I make, it's hand built and should look like it.

Most companies take the opposite view. 99.9% likely it's from the dealer not the factory. Canon doesn't seal their packaging, anyone can try it, not like it and return it. The dealer generously accepted it back and didn't inspect it before shipping it to you. The world is full of returns products and they get more money reselling the item as new.

It's up to you if this is unacceptable and should be returned. I'd consider using anther dealer this time and next time.

Sounds like a customer purchase then return, or the store pulled it out to show a customer and put it all back. Personally things like that don't bother me, because I purchase much larger items that I know have had previous people's hands on it (cars, houses, etc). That is what the 1+ year warranties are for. If it has no physical damage and is just fingermark-related, I am fine with it.

If it was sold as brand new it should have came with a protective film over the both the back and top screen's, at least mine did. I would check the shutter count. Sounds like you may have gotten a display unit or one someone returned.

I'll agree about the store handling thing.

Lots of stuff gets opened and repacked right away
at places like Best Buy.

The display models are chained down and you can't
really get a feel for the item with the security fixture
in the way.

I bought it at Future Shop in Canada... which is sort of similar to Best Buy. I am going to check out London Drugs, and ask them to carefully open the box and check for this LCD protector. If the box is sealed however, then I will know something is up... because mine wasn't sealed. But all the vids I saw on youtube for the same camera with kit lens show an unsealed box too... tough to say.

Also, I haven't done the shutter count as I didn't know about that feature at the time. (erg). But I think I might have the first images I shot with this thing still. Not sure if the IMG_xxxx numbers are a reliable indication of that though. But I think if I see a closed box or an LCD protector film on another store's 6D, I will return the first one and show them the pic I took as my reasoning.

My 6d came with no film. Same with 2 5dmk3 I bought from various mfgs.

i made a test for this program on the 5D3 and it work fine
but on the 6D not work
the list says that :
Support EOS: 1000D,1100D,450D,500D,​550D,600D,650D,40D,50D​,60D,7D,5DMKII,5DMKIII​,1DMKIV,1DX

where can i find like this for the 6D ?

I have bought 3 Canon dSLR's and none have had the protective film on the lcd. None of the boxes were sealed in any way if I remember correctly.

Bottom line is if the camera is working as it is supposed to... and you can shake the disappointment that it may have been touched by someone at Future Shop before you purchased it, I would say congrats on your new camera and start enjoying it.

If you can't shake that disappointment you can take it back and see if they will exchange for another one.. of which you will either get 1. disappointed when they say no returns for something like fingerprints 2. get a new camera that has issues your first camera did not or 3. get a new camera without any finger prints.

Two of those possibilities are not any better than your current situation... so do you feel lucky?

Everyone is different, but I wouldn't even give this a 2nd thought, if I even noticed it. I'd rather they not waste more plastic by putting a shipping protector on it, as these things can take much more of a beating than what they see in a factory, store, or a box.

It's possible that the Rebels come with a protector b/c the screen cover is not as hard as what's found on the prosumer and pro bodies...

This is what happens when shops give a 30 day money back offer, or something similar. Maybe someone had it for a test run and gave it back. Maybe someone else had it after them and did it again. Maybe no one has used it and it was just carelessly packaged.......... The shutter count will tell the tale, but when I bought my 70-200, I tried a lens out in the shop and was given an unopened one when I decided to buy it.

only the refurb cameras come with a protective lcd film.

canon does not seal any dslrs in the US (not sure about other countries)

check the shutter count. only a few fingerprints doesn't mean anything especially since you couldn't find any other scratches or bumps.
