I currently am shooting mostly on a kit 18-135STM. I also have an older non IS 70-300. In researching a ultra wide landscape lens i keep reading how wonderful the 15-85 is for image quality. I'm OK with, but not wowed by, the image quality of the STM but some of the images I see in here with the 15-85 just blow me away. It is of course quite possible that that is operator skill difference. Would I be better off keeping the 18-135 or selling it for the 15-85 as a walk around. I have the length in the other lens so I guess it just comes down to relative image quality. How much wider is 15 than 18 on the wide angle? 60D tok 11-16, sig 17-50, canon 24-105L,100-400 IS L, celestron 5SE

Get good at using the equipment you have and also at processing the photos. I got caught up in buying new equipment at first, too. I ended up making purchases that I regretted or learning that it was the equipment that was limiting me, but my lack in skills with both taking and processing the photos. Aug 06, 2013 10:30 | #3592 I agree with Brenda. When I first got my kit and a Nifty 250, I didn't realize just how capable the 250 really is if you learn how to use it. I suppose the same could be said for other lower end glass.

I also plan to pick up a used tokina 11-16 or a sig 10-22 or if money comes in the mail maybe a canon 10-22 at some point in the not too distant future. Anyways thanks in advance for sharing your superior knowledge with a noob. If you want wide go for the 10-22. Not really sure you'll really notice anything on the 15 vs. 18 side and you'll end up with two lenses with basically the same range. Spend the money on something you'll notice a good difference with. My 10-22 was the second lens bought and would do it all the same again. The canon version, if I remember right has a UD element in it which is what they use in their L series and have noticed great IQ from it, so pretty sure if you're looking for IQ this will do the job. If you're talking strictly just better IQ from a walk around lens I have no input on the 15-85 since I've never owned one. I do know that a 10-22 can be had for a fairly cheap price, my buddy found one here locally and picked it up for $350 with a focus ring problem, took it to a local authorized canon shop and had it fixed for $75. Had another find one on the same local site and got his BNIB for $450. The 10-22 and 70-200 are basically the only 2 lenses I use. Almost everything I shoot is with those 2 lenses. Here is my flickr, just know that anything shot wide is with the 10-22 and anything long is with the 70-200. http://www.flickr.com/photos/drdphotos/ 6D . Gripped 60D . Gripped XSI . Opteka 6.5 . Instead of learning what I had, I kept buying more and more thinking it was the gear, nope it's greatly just user skill. I would suggest in picking up Lightroom 5, maybe a tripod, and a 430 EX II over getting a new lens. The 18-135 is a great walk around lens and the 70-300 to add to the reach if needed (zoo/candid/portrait). A lot of powerful photos to me come from composition, the right lighting, time and day and a lovely background to add to it. I'm actively lazy!!

I do have a nifty fifty that I've used twice in the last year. If you go to my site and see some of the early car show stuff I did it's garbage compared to what I'm churning out this year. It was all about learning what to shoot, how, and when. I think I'm doing pretty decent now and with minimal post processing. That is just a preference for me though because I think the automotive photographers on this site way over process their images. In fact I think there is very little photography involved in what most are doing here with cars. It's kind of gross IMO. Jason: 60d user. I would only shoot my niece (now 2yrs old) indoors with the 50mm. I also used the fisheye as a tourist lens, which meant architecture and friends/family here and there. 60D, 8mm FE, 40mm, 55-250mm, 430 EX II
