A sad story...

Recently I had a bag of equipment go missing from my office. The bag contained my 3 month old 1D-X, a 24-105 f/4L lens, my infrared-converted 10D and a 15-35mm f/2.8L lens plus a few other bits and pieces.

I'm not a professional photographer and the place where all the camera equipment was stored is a back room to which people visiting our premises would have no access. Yet the bag went missing and we are 99% sure it isn't hidden in a 'safe place' somewhere else in the building.

We found a "lost" person wandering around very quietly and suspiciously in this area of the building last week and believe this person or a similar individual may have tiptoed in at some point, grabbed a bag at random and got very lucky.

I'm checking insurance etc and when 100% certain it is definitely lost (the store room has a ton of junk in it which needs clearing out later this month), will report to police as lost / possibly stolen.

Anyway, my question to you all is: how easy would it be for the 1D-X to be tracked if it is indeed stolen and being sold on?

I have the serial number from the EXIF data on the images and the receipt from MapCamera in Tokyo where I bought it in February. It's not the most common camera and reselling would have a limited possible market.

Any suggestions / advice welcome.

This website employes crawlers/bots that collect the exif data from photos on flickr and other sites and stores the serial numbers of the cameras.

Keep your receipt and police report in a safe place.

List your camera and other missing gear, and just wait.
