Took the tamron to the zoo. Obviously I could of used longer of a lens but here is a full size sample, then at the crop I choose then a 100%. I need some opinions on the overall look and sharpness. This is a LR4 PP image, simple sliders with only sharpening applied.

What are your thoughts? ISO 400 1/1000 F2.8 @ 200mm

That looks nice and sharp, can't really complain @ f2.8.

Don't do that or you will want to upgrade again. :D

I went through a MF Tamron 80-200 f/2.8, Sigma 70-200 HSM and then finally bought the MK II in the end. In the middle of the road I also used the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 non-IS and the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 non-VC. Too much hassle really. If you can afford it I'd say just get the MK II and then you're done with the dilemma! :-)

Maybe, maybe not. I got this tamron for $1200. Is it worth ~$800 more for the mk2? I find the performance at 200mm 2.8 very good myself. I'm still trying out the lens in various settings but it passed my zoo trip. I need to find some sports, this I think is where the canon might pull ahead.

I think you have pretty much answered your own question ;)

If you find the Tamron @ 200mm good enough which btw is supposed to be its weakest focal length, then why mkII?

I mean I can only imagine that it will drives you nuts :p Besides the difference is probably only noticeable when pixel peeping...

And I think the AF on body is more important for sports. With 6D, the difference in AF speed between the 2 lenses is negligible.

Looks good for 200mm 2.8. Bang for the buck I think you should be happy with that.

I have the Canon MKII simply because I bought before the Tamron was available, and I have sufficient resources available to buy it. If the Tamron were out at the time (and available for $1200), I would have tried both and I think I would have had a much more difficult decision to make!

I agree with others. It's very good for 200mm wide open on a 20mp camera. The 100% crop has a lot of details. I honestly think the MK II has a little bit better resolving power but unless you shoot with 2x teleconverter the difference is so tiny that it 's negligible.

Thats my next step is to try it out with my kenko. I took a few shots with it when I got it and I wasn't happy with it but could be because it may of needed MA'd
