I don't know what it's called, but I think this is what it is. I'm not plagued with GAS. Instead I suffer with I.D.I. (Insufficient Discretionary Income). It's crippling sometimes, but I still manage to add a little gear to my collection from time to time.
This is how he looked when I first saw him, frightened and dirty. The shop manager knew I'd give him a good home. Took a bit of scrubbing but he cleaned up pretty nice. And best of all his battery still took a charge. And I'm going to stop referring to it as "him" now. It sounds a little creepy.
This Sony MVC-FD73 had to have been bought around 1999 or 2000. Not all that long ago really but it shows how quickly digital photography has progressed. I can easily imagine this camera costing around $500 at that time and here's what you got for your hard earned money. There's no place to plug in a cable and connect it to your computer to download your pictures. So you just plug your memory card into your card reader, right? Well, not exactly. This thing records on the once ubiquitous floppy disk. And it will hold about a dozen shots before you have to swap in a new floppy. The only reason it will store this many pics is that it shoots heavily compressed jpegs at a maximum size of 640 x 480. That's right, approximately 1/3 MP! What do you want for $500?
It does have a 10x optical zoom which seems pretty impressive though and it will focus down to about 1/2". There's only one shooting mode (AV at a fixed aperture) but there are a few special effects modes and exposure compensation. And at a half press of the shutter it just continuously focuses until you take your shot. But you'll have to wait a few seconds to see the results while it clicks and whirs and writes the file to the floppy disk. Kind of reminds you of shooting with an old Polaroid.
For comparison sake the shots of the Sony were taken with another of my recently adopted cameras, a Canon Powershot A620. A pretty impressive camera for what it is, plus it's got the flippy screen going for it. The shot of the Canon was taken with the Sony and leaves a lot to be desired. They're just barely viewable at 100% on my monitor. But what did you expect? It's only a $500 camera from way back at the turn of the century. The fact that the 55-250 still balances well and makes the camera far more comfortable is the tough part. I love the camera, just really wish I could have something akin to a native Zeiss lens for the camera instead of having to go Samyang/Rokinon, it would've been nice to have an APS-C native 35 especially since the 35 FL is so useful. Still missing the Nikon 50 1.4G on the D700 but it ain't worth dropping the cash for a whole new system just because of one lens. I don't have first-hand experience, but I've seen multiple people post that the original (non-VC) Tammy 17-50/2.8 is sharper than the later version with VC. But I'm not convinced in any way that Flickr is a viable marketing tool. I've never read of anyone using it for promotion, although I'm sure its not uncommon. I like Flickr as a) a place to upload as a back-up option, and b) its easy to post photos here on POTN from Flickr. I think it's a great lens, maybe I just got a good copy (I bought new). The construction feels pretty robust and I guess the creep doesn't really bother me (I normally carry my camera by the lens, rather than the body). There is some vignetting, but it is really easy to correct that in Lightroom. It would be nice if it were faster on the long end, but then it'd be bigger & heavier. It balances quite well on the 60D IMO. Good luck with whatever you decide to get! Thanks!
