Lighter Than Air (Let's see them)

Our local airport seems to be a stopover for blimps on the way to sporting events on the east coast. Particularly for the Baltimore/DC area.

Yesterday evening I was out in the front yard when the MetLife blimp went over on the way to the airport. This morning I went out to the airport to try to get some more shots of it. Weather this morning was lousy (overcast and drizzle) which I found out was why the blimp stopped here on its trip from Ohio to NC for a golf tournament.

Coincidentally enough, that blimp (or one just like it) was over Rochester, NY on Monday. Forgot my camera, though.

Thanks, I would have rather had it where I could get somebody's house roof or something in the shot. But it got too close to me before I saw it.

Until they went out of business last year, this was the only dirigible flying in the U.S.

Not sure about the Army or Navy, but Met Life and Goodyear are Blimps, not dirigibles.

Since I hadn't considered what the US military was playing with nowadays, I did some searching, the Navy is playing with a Blimp with the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division and it is designated as an MZ-3A, and the Army was playing with an LEMV, but that program was cancelled back in Feb. If you know of some Dirigibles in the U.S., I'd be interested in hearing about them?

A dirigible is defined as a powered, steerable airship. Blimps ARE dirigibles.

You probably mean that your dirigible was the the only rigid airship flying in the US, but rigid, semi-rigid and blimps are all dirigibles. The term doesn't relate to "rigid" it comes from the French for steerable, if an airship can be steered it is called a dirigible airship, or dirigible for short.
