I have a canon 40D with a 70-200 2.8
I use it at football games

I had a cheap monopod (my mistake) attached
well the monopod cracked up by the screw in cuz it was cheap
I always worried about my camera falling off the cheap monopod
and the screw would just turn in the monopod so I couldnt remove it
finally after the season I carefully broke off the cheap plastic and got the screw out
so I could remove the screw from the lens holder

so lesson learned I went to Percision camera in Austin and got a better monopod
a BENRO Classic A38F Monopod

and Im adding a 1D Mark II to the pod which is heavier
if I can get good pics out of it

what I am afraid of is the screw striping again in the monopod like the cheap one did
and also the pressure point between the lens collar and the monopod

am I just paranoid or do I need a ball or something to put on my monopod and lens collar?

and if so Ill take recomendations

thanks

I just spent 5 days using my RRS monopod and MH-2 Pro monopod head. The MH-2 isn't cheap but I have to say, it's a joy to use. Everything adjusts so smoothly. One of the advantages over the less expensive options is the ability to change the orientation of the clamp without the use of tools, so you can switch between a lens plate and your camera plate or L plate.

I have a 681B (3 section) and a 680B (4 section) monopod from Manfrotto. I use both to support a 400mm f/2.8 lens with a 1 series camera body and have for years. I never use a head. Both are under $80. These were purchased on the recommendation of a top pro who shoots with a 400 and had used the Manfrotto for several years. If you keep the lens tight on the screw, they should never break at the screw.

+1

I have a 680B and its been through hell and back in the past 3 years. Don't use a head, and it shows NO sign of wear or breaking. I always mount the monopod on the lens collar, and I make sure it's tight, but not overly tight. Works like a charm.

Can't go wrong here. I use the 681B for the past three seasons with my 400mm. I did have an issue with the plate where the lens screws on to the pod (it cracked)...but it was replaced as a manufactured defect with no questions asked. And as the others said I do not use a head. This is one area where you get what you paid for. But the right one the first time so you don't have to worry about replacing it with another.

I use a ballhead that originally was fitted to my tripod, its ideal and I've fitted it with an Arca Swiss clamp so the camera can quickly be switched from my tripod if need be.

I like the extra flexibility the ballhead brings to the monopod. If need be, I can place the foot out in front, or even between my legs when in a crowded location.

I use a 680B MAnfrotto with a 234RC2 head. The quick release is great if I need to lose the 'pod quick for a 'down and dirty' shot when shooting football (soccer). Also handy when kitting/stripping before or after a game.
That's with a 1DMKIV + Sigma 120-300 f2.8.

I have been using the Manfrotto monopod 681B and the 496RC2 Ball Head with Quick Release for the past 10 years now with no problems at all. I'll mount my 70-200 2.8 or my 300 2.8 and don't think twice about it.

Hope I did this right. I'm new to this site. This is my set-up for football, baseball, and soccer. For baseball minus the flash.
