wOOw great images here, I love this 17-40 thread, inspires me!

Question is;
Are there many here who use the EF 17-40 also own the EF 24-105mm lens also..?

I've an EF 24-105mm, but wonder if the EF 17-40mm lens is to similar..?

I own both. I don't use the 24-105 as much anymore but it is a great general lens where as the 17-40 is my go to landscape lens.

I don't own the 24-105 but I'll give you a different perspective. I bought my 5D3 body only and opted for the 17-40 (my second copy). I later decided I wanted a walkaround but couldn't afford the 24-105 so I found a pretty cheap, used Tamron 28-75.

After using both, I've decided that the difference between 40mm to 75mm doesn't feel like much. I think a 24-105 would be a nice compliment to the 17-40. There are times when you watch extra reach and in the event you can't carry a camera bag, 24mm on a full frame is still pretty wide. Obviously there's some overlap but I think the 41mm-105mm reach you gain is pretty handy.

Jut my 2 cents...

I have both. My 24-105 came with my 5D3 kit, so I kept it. It was great as a starter lens and I'll probably keep it as a multiple-purpose lens when I don't want to take more than one lens. However, since I bought my 70-300L, I no longer use my 24-105 for travel. I usually travel with my 17-40 and 70-300L. Great combination for just about everything really, except when you want a single lens and travel very light. The 24-105 is great for kids' birthday parties, going to the park, etc.

Personally, I couldn't live without my 24-105. That lens is crucial when I'm out at a new location where I don't know what focal length I will be needing. This is the case especially when traveling. I primarily use my 17-40 when local, or when I have visited a location before (or researched it ahead of time) and know that I will need the 17-40.

Thanks for the comment, Brandon! I actually took those last night. It has been less cloudy/foggy as of late, especially compared to June and July. Pretty typical.

Nice John! I really like the one with the moon rising over the water. Were these taken recently? I know it's been pretty cloudy/foggy at the coast in San Diego as of late.

Thanks for the replies, greatly appreciated.

I'm hoping to add a mint/used EF 17-40mm f/4 L to my camera bag within the next week or so. I LOVE viewing the SUPERB images here, awesome.

I own both. I'm a prime shooter and use my zooms primarily when I travel, which is less and less often with more and more kids. I really want to sell my 24-105 to get a 50L or upgrade my 85. I feel like they do become a bit redundant and I'd rather carry my 17-40 and my 70-200 when I travel. Should be pretty obvious if I want wide or long, and the gap from 40-70 can be made up either with a 50 or my feet.

Can you tell I'm selling myself on the 50L this morning? Don't worry, tomorrow I'll have changed my mind again. I really need to get my 17-40 out again. I don't use it enough at home and the wide angles are fun to play with.

From our recent trip to Nassau bahamas. The original Jaws was filmed at this beach.
