Time to revive the thread! Here's one of the Lion's Gate Bridge in Vancouver:

^^^ Nice. Your pictures are seriously making me consider this lens. I just bought a used 5d, what are your thoughts on the 5d/24 prime combo?

The combination has served me well for years. The 24mm f/2.8 is a compact, light lens. You can easily slip it into a coat pocket. I imagine they're relatively inexpensive these days. I bought mine in 2004, if I remember correctly.

24mm is a great focal length on a 5D. It's about as wide as you can go without worrying about getting your feet in the shot. It's noticeably wider than 28mm; it seems to be capable of more 'wow' than a 28mm. On the other hand, it's sometimes difficult to frame shots because it's so wide. I do like the focal length and I'd never be without it by choice.

This lens doesn't distort too much. It's pretty sharp. Wide open it's not too bad in the center. Stopped down it's really sharp in the center. The corners get sharper as you stop down, but they're always a bit soft. Mine is softer on the left side than the right. I will upgrade one day; I'll buy a more expensive 24mm prime. I like primes.

So... I haven't had a chance to get out and shoot much yet, but I think I'm going to love this lens. My copy is impressively sharp at f2.8, has nice color, and pretty darn quick AF. It's pretty awesome. I might be biased as I've never had a very wide prime and it's my first time using a full frame camera (old 5d)... here's what I have to show so far - not much of a subject, just some nice morning light before work. ISO 100, f2.8, 1/1250 - what gets me is that at full magnification in LR, I can see that I need to clean the dust off of my blinds!

aprescott, congrats! I hope you like the lens. I've taken many of my favourite photos with it. Even if I buy a wide angle upgrade, I think I'll still hang onto this little lens. It's very handy to have. Most of the time, when I'm travelling light, I carry it with my 50mm f/1.4. I barely notice it's there. You can't do that with most 24mm EF mount lenses!

Is this EF 24mm f/2.8 a decent lens attached to a 5D Mk2 body for landscape photography ??

I'd say yes, as long as you don't miss zooming too much. I really think primes force me to focus more on composition, and the whole image benefits as a result. Yes, a 17-40L is wider, but the f4 thing really bugs me sometimes, especially when the copy I had needed to be stopped done further to really get sharp. My 24 prime offers so much creativity, just not zooming. Here's a recent snap from last nigh while walking the dogs -

Haven't posted in ages, but seeing as this thread is still showing some great shots I figured I should add more. I've recently got a 5D and it is so nice to be using this lens back at 24mm where I really loved it when using film. These are a couple of shots from camping this weekend. Loon Lake in Northern California. Straight OOC, aside from shrinking down to upload. This lens will be getting a lot more use, although it will probably fight for time with my 85.
