I have a Nikkor AI-S 300mm f/2.8 IFED which I haven't used in many many years. Cost me an arm and a leg back in the mid 1980s. Superb lens, but big and pricey. Also, I once had a Nikkor AI-S 300mm f/4.5 (non ED). Very sharp, compact and built like a tank.

The 300mm f4.5 may fit your bill.

I've heard good things about the Tamron Adaptall mount lenses, a lot of different options were made too.

I had a Tamron SP 300mm f/5.6 which was very good, light, and it focuses close to 1.4meter

Also, the SP 60-300 f/3.8-5.4 Adaptall-2(Model 23A) Macro/Zoom is still regarded as a high-quality long tele-lens, with great-condition copies selling at and under US $60 on the 'bay.
I grabbed mine for under US $40 as a package deal (with a throwaway Soligor 135 f/2.8 T4 = extensive fungus, corroded aluminum) about 2 years ago, then clamped a generic A(W) tripod ring on it.
The optics and cosmetics are nearly flawless, and it's capable of great images.

The solid, anodized aluminum AD-2 to EOS mounts I grabbed, also from the 'bay,
only set me back about 7 bucks each, and they fit to both lens and camera with no issues.

Of course I'm all right! Why? What have you heard?!?
