I'm trying to build a portfolio, offering free photography by word of mouth, craigslist, facebook, etc.. I made some photo-shoots, a birthday party, an engagement photo-shoot, and already have 3 bookings this month so far.
I'm offering free photography, family portraits, pets, birthdays, engagements, weddings.. Indoors or outdoors. I deliver the screen-size processed photos by email. In case the client likes my work, they can purchase a DVD of processed JPEGS and original RAW files for $20 (Really just to cover for gas)
I get a text message from a girl for asking for wedding photography, the first thing I explained as I do regarding "wedding photography" was that I'm still developing my skills and I greatly emphasize and encourage to hire a professional photographer with a solid portfolio before anything.
During about 30 minutes of texting, I explained why I'm doing free photography (to build a portfolio) and when she asled about why professional photographers charge so much I explained how it is (insurance, backup equipment, backup photographer in case of accident, etc..)
She decided to call, and after she explained how they changed their venue+photographer+DJ deal, they lost their deposit and now looking for an affordable photographer. She saw my ad on craigslist and decided to contact me.
**During the phone conversation, she complained how her situation is difficult and how she lost her money and I explained that I too didn't expect people to call me for weddings, I have 4 weddings booked and all these people are in worse situations than she is.
After a long phone call of being clear and sincere, I get a txt..
Her: (You should remove that cheap "ready for birthdays, engagements and weddings" since you were not expecting to do weddings)
Me:"I was not expecting so many people would call a free photographer to do weddings, but apparently some do, and some can't afford a great photographer"
Her: "Some people are less fortunate than others, and you should be prepared for that"
Me: "I'm offering FREE photography and charging $20 for a CD, I don't think any photographer can do better for the less fortunate."
Her: I'll be going with another photographer who seems to have a better attitude and professionalism toward his clients. Thank you.
[B]Me: Good luck and congratulations again.
This person really did poison my mood for a few minutes.. After being upfront about my skill level, encouraging her to get a good photographer, and offering to assist in taking more photos..... this is what I get?!
How do you guys deal with such mentalities?
