So it is my hope that the iso on 5 D markIII will allow me to shoot in bad light with the canon 300 f4. Bad light being indoor swimming, high school football at night ( no flash aloud) lacrosse again high school light. Question being, has anyone tried this and were you happy with the results?
Thanks

We can't evaluate the venues you are looking to shoot in since we are not there.

Can you visit these venues with whatever lens you have now and meter the situation? Then it is no problem to figure out if f/4 will be a fast enough lens for the maximum ISO you will accept on the 5D3 and the shutter speed you want.

I don't shoot in indoor pools, but I do shoot in a lot of gyms. Most HS gyms range from an exposure of EV6 to EV8. A really great gym could be as bright as EV9.

My personal limit for the 5D3 is ISO 12800, so if I had an f/4 lens my best case shutter speeds in that light would be:

EF 6 - ISO 12800, f/4 and 1/250
EV 7 - 1//500
EV 8 - 1/1000

Above that I'd start backing off on the ISO, but then I never shoot in gyms that bright.

It was worded poorly by me, thanks for the response. I do not have a markIII but am looking to get one soon. I was looking for someone who shoots 5dmarkIII, sports and hopefully was able to use the the 300 at f4.
As I can buy a refurbished 5d MarkIII a 300 f4 for much less than a 300 f2.8.

Stadium light seems better overall than gym light and can go with my 70-200. Wow 12,800 . Thanks again

Sounds like JeffreyG may have given you the info you really need, which is basically that the 5D3 produces acceptable results at ISO 12.8K (second the Wow!). Which actually isn't very surprising. I'm quite happy with my 5DII at 6400 (with some liberal noise reduction). Now, all you need is a camera and a lens that can stop down to f/4, which it sounds like you have. Take it to the location you plan to shoot and see what shutter speed you can achieve at ISO 12.8. . .or if your camera doesn't go that high, see if you can get half the desired shutter speed at ISO 6400 (you get the idea). Then, as long as 300mm is going to be long enough, you should be good to go.

Yes, this is what I meant. In fact, the OP doesn't even need an f/4 lens. You could just walk into the venue at shoot a picture at any settings until the exposure looks right.

Then use the rules of reciprocity and the exposure triangle and the settings at the desired ISO and aperture can be calculated.

Yeah I wanted to know the same thing, since I purchased the 5DIII and wasn't about to fork over $6,500 for a 300 f/2.8. So I borrowed the 300 f/4 to test it out. The light on this field was so, so. They cycled too. Here is what I got. I thought they came out pretty good.

CPS is send me the 300 f4 to try for a couple of weeks and the high school has first game Friday so I should get a chance at teh venue i shoot most often. I would have tried the venue earlier if it was being used.......ah first world problems. Thanks again

You really are going to have to know what your venue is able to give you light wise. I shoot four different football fields on a regular basis. One has great lighting...and even lighting (end zones are lit very similar to the light between the 20's...and I'm at ISO 6400, f2.8 at 1/800...then I have fields where I'm at ISO 12,800 in the mid field at f2.8 and 1/800 but end zones would need ISO 25600 to freeze the action.

As far as pools and gyms go...I only have one HS gym in my area I could get away with ISO 12800, f/4 and 1/800 at...all others I'm at 12800, f/2.8 and 1/800. So for me I'll only put on a f/4 lens when I'm using flash or strobes.

I know this helps you absolutely zero...but just restating what the others are telling you with some numbers of mine.

Good luck...and let us know what you find out.

I agree for venue......for pool and basketball ill go with 70-200 2.8 which has worked fine on my 1dmarkIII just want the distance for football and lacrosse.....should never of mentioned basketball as it maybe too long anyway. Warren same deal on stadiums. The one I shoot most has horrible light, and one with brand new lights. The 300 f4 arrived yesterday and I'm not doing back flips over it. However, shooting it with my 1D.......refurbished 5d markIII they are out of. So I'll see how much or how long I can shoot without going back to the 70-200... As always thanks for any and all info.

About 2 weeks, platinum members and repair replacements get priority. They did give me a date and stuck to it. Yes, I love CPS.

The high ISO will extend your picture taking environment but bad light is just bad light. I borrowed a 5DIII from CPS and it took wonderful images. It allowed me to extend ISO well above my 1DII and use my 580EX flash in HSS mode to fill in the shadows from HS football lighting.

Well picking up the old 300 f4 non is from Keh, will shoot high school tomorrow night and college at high noon sat........light challenges in both events. Can't wait, glad they have a 7 day return policy, but after using the one from Cps I think I'll be fine on my 5d
